Tarrant is known for being home to the ABC Coke plant. This plant is owned by the Drummond Company and is the biggest producer of a special type of fuel called foundry coke in the United States.

Tarrant's History

The city of Tarrant got its name through a contest held in 1915. Many people suggested the name Tarrant to honor Benjamin Tarrant. He had lived in the community for most of his life. Other stories say the city was named after Felix I. Tarrant. He was the president of the National Cast Iron Pipe Company. This company built the first big industrial factory in the area in 1912.

Tarrant officially became an incorporated city on August 17, 1918. Its first mayor was George Washington Thomason. The first count of people, called a census, happened in 1920. It showed that Tarrant City had a population of 734 people. The community was known as Tarrant City until the 1990 U.S. Census. After that, its name was shortened to just Tarrant.

Tarrant's Economy

A very important part of Tarrant's economy is the ABC Coke plant. This plant is owned by the Drummond Company. The magazine Forbes has called it "the largest single producer of foundry coke in the U.S.". Foundry coke is a special type of fuel used in making metals.
