Tatsuya Endo (Japanese: 遠藤 達哉, Hepburn: Endō Tatsuya, born July 23, 1980) is a talented Japanese manga artist. He is famous for creating popular manga series like Tista, Blade of the Moon Princess, and especially Spy × Family. Spy × Family has been published online since 2019. By March 2024, over 35 million copies were in circulation. This makes it one of the best-selling manga series ever! His other works have also appeared in various Jump magazines.

Tatsuya Endo's Early Life

Tatsuya Endo always dreamed of becoming a manga artist. He grew up with one parent and a brother. He enjoys watching movies and has favorite actors like Bruce Lee and Meg Ryan. Some of his favorite manga artists include Akira Toriyama. For fun, he likes skiing, basketball, and other racket-based ball games.

What Inspires Tatsuya Endo

In his free time, Tatsuya Endo finds ideas from different TV shows. He has mentioned that shows like "Under the Dome" and "Cukur" inspired him. He also shared that he likes actors such as Aras Bulut Iynemli.

Tatsuya Endo's Career Journey

Before creating his own big hits, Tatsuya Endo worked as an assistant. He helped with popular manga series like Blue Exorcist and Attack on Titan. He learned a lot from experienced manga artists like Yasuhiro Kanō.

How He Started

Like many manga artists, Endo began by creating one-shots. These are short, single stories. Some of these early stories later influenced his longer manga series. After finishing Tista and Blade of the Moon Princess, he worked on three more one-shots. He worked closely with his editor, Shihei Lin, whom he had known for over 10 years.

Creating Spy × Family

Endo and Lin then started planning a new series for Shōnen Jump+. This new manga would combine the best parts of Endo's earlier works. They created Spy × Family. His editor said that everyone in their department loved Spy × Family. Its publication was almost certain even before an official meeting. By 2019, Spy × Family became one of the top ten most popular manga on their website. It also became one of the most popular anime shows in 2022.

Awards for Spy × Family

  • Spy × Family
    • 2019: Won 1st place in the web manga category of the Next Manga Awards.
    • 2020: Won the 4th TSUTAYA Comic Awards.

Tatsuya Endo's Drawing Style

When Tatsuya Endo first started, he published stories with more serious themes. This was true for his early titles like Tista and Rengoku no Ashe. After working on many manga with these serious tones, his editor, Shihei Lin, encouraged him. Lin suggested that Endo try to create a more "bright and cheerful manga."

From Serious to Cheerful

His one-shot story, I Spy, was a step between his serious and cheerful stories. It still had some mature themes but was also a "cheerful title." His work on Spy × Family is his first manga that is completely cheerful.

His Creative Process

Endo's editor says that he likes to think through every small detail of a story. If someone suggests an idea, Endo quickly points out any parts that don't make sense. He also likes to create characters that are deep and well-thought-out. This helps him tell stories that show how his characters' feelings change. To make his work even better, Endo reads many manga, novels, and books.
