Tavistock is a small place in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county. Tavistock is part of the area that uses the 19803 ZIP Code.

Exploring Tavistock's Location

Tavistock is found northwest of Wilmington, a larger city in Delaware. It's located in an area known as the Brandywine Hundred. You can find Tavistock along U.S. Route 202, a main road. It sits between two other communities, Talleyville and Rockland.

Natural Surroundings

This community is right next to some beautiful natural areas. It borders both Brandywine Creek State Park and Woodley Park. A small stream called Husbands Run flows through the neighborhood. This stream is a "tributary," meaning it's a smaller stream that flows into a larger one, in this case, the Brandywine Creek. Tavistock is home to 176 houses.

A Look Back at Tavistock's Past

Tavistock was created by a group called Woodlawn Trustees. The land where Tavistock now stands used to belong to a person named E.B. Talley. The nearby community of Talleyville is named after him.

How Tavistock Was Planned

Woodlawn Trustees bought this land in 1906. This group was started in 1901 by a kind person named William Poole Bancroft. He was a Quaker and a philanthropist, which means he used his money to help others. Bancroft knew that the city of Wilmington would grow north along the Brandywine Creek.

He wanted to make sure this growth happened in an organized way. He also wanted to protect land and help people find affordable homes. So, Woodlawn Trustees developed several neighborhoods. These communities were built a bit away from the Brandywine Creek and west of Concord Pike (U.S. 202). They include places like Alapocas, Woodbrook, Sharpley, and Edenridge. People have called these neighborhoods a "string of pearls" because they are connected and valuable.

Tavistock's Development

These neighborhoods were part of a big plan for the Brandywine Hundred area. This plan was created by Charles Wellford Leavitt in 1922. Tavistock itself was built in the mid-1960s. It was designed to include a large, wooded area for the old Talley homestead. This old house was meant to be a special "focal point" for the community.
