Edward Lawson Birnie (born August 25, 1878 – died December 21, 1935) was an English professional football player and manager. He played for several famous clubs like Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. Later, he became a manager, leading Southend United until he retired in 1934.

Ted Birnie's Playing Days
Ted Birnie was born in Sunderland. He started his football journey at a local club called Sunderland Seaburn. Soon after, he joined Newcastle United.
Playing as a Centre Half
Birnie was a strong player who played as a centre half. This position is like a central defender. He played 19 matches for Newcastle United between 1898 and 1903.
Time at Crystal Palace
After Newcastle, Birnie moved to Crystal Palace. He played in 29 matches for them in total. Out of these, 22 were in the Southern Football League.
Joining Chelsea F.C.
In August 1906, Ted Birnie joined Chelsea. His first game for Chelsea was on September 8, 1906. It was a 0–0 draw against Blackpool. He played 108 games for Chelsea and scored three goals. Chelsea's home ground is Stamford Bridge.
Moving to Tottenham Hotspur
