The Tehuantepec River is an important river located in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It flows into the Gulf of Tehuantepec, which is part of the Pacific Ocean. This gulf is found along the coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

About the Tehuantepec River

The area where the Tehuantepec River flows is very mountainous. Because of these mountains, there are no large rivers that boats can travel on. Instead, you'll find many smaller rivers. These smaller rivers often have different names depending on the specific area they pass through.

Water Flow and Drainage

A special line called the continental divide runs through Oaxaca. This divide means that some rivers in the state flow towards the Gulf of Mexico. Other rivers flow towards the Pacific Ocean.

Rivers Flowing to the Gulf

Most of the water that flows towards the Gulf of Mexico comes from two main rivers. These are the Papaloapan River and the Coatzacoalcos River. They also have many smaller rivers that join them, like the Grande and Salado Rivers.

Rivers Flowing to the Pacific

Three main rivers carry most of the water towards the Pacific Ocean. These are the Atoyac River, the Mixteco River, and the Tehuantepec River. Each of these rivers also has its own smaller rivers that feed into them.
