Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tellurium trioxide, also known as tellurium(VI) oxide, is a chemical compound. Its chemical formula is TeO3. This means it has one tellurium atom and three oxygen atoms. Tellurium trioxide contains tellurium in a special state called its +6 oxidation state.

What is Tellurium Trioxide Like?

Tellurium trioxide can appear in two different ways. One form is yellow-red, and the other is gray. The yellow-red form is more active. It is a strong oxidizing agent, which means it can take electrons from other chemicals. It reacts with strong bases to create new compounds called tellurates. When you heat it up, it lets go of oxygen and changes into tellurium dioxide.

How is Tellurium Trioxide Made?

This compound is made by removing water from telluric acid. The gray form of tellurium trioxide can be created from the yellow-red form. This happens when the yellow-red form reacts with sulfuric acid and air.
