Templeton Rye: A Secret History
Templeton is famous for something called Templeton Rye. This was a special type of rye product made during the Prohibition era. Prohibition was a time in the United States when it was illegal to make or sell alcohol.
Even though it was against the law, many clever farmers in Carroll County found ways to make this rye product. They sold it secretly to earn money, especially during the Great Depression. This was a very hard time for many families. Templeton Rye became very popular in big cities like Chicago and Omaha. At one point, this small town, with fewer than 500 people, was using huge amounts of sugar each month to make the product.
