Her Early Life and First Performances
Maria Teresa Trombetta was born in a town called San Benigno Canavese, Italy. She started her singing career in 1801 in Turin, which was her very first public performance. After that, she sang in other Italian cities like Parma and Trieste.
In 1803, she traveled to Paris, France. There, she performed in two important operas. She sang the main character in Nina by Giovanni Paisiello. She also played the main role in Griselda by Ferdinando Paer.
Singing at La Scala
In 1804, Maria Teresa Belloc-Giorgi first sang the role of Nina at La Scala. La Scala is a very famous opera house in Milan, Italy. She continued to sing at La Scala for the next 20 years.
She performed in many operas during her time there. In 1823, she sang the main role in a new version of Medea in Corinto by Simon Mayr. She also played Isabella in the first performance of L'inganno felice in Venice in 1812.
Famous Rossini Roles
Maria Teresa Belloc-Giorgi especially loved singing in operas by the famous composer Gioachino Rossini. In 1817, she created the role of Ninetta in La gazza ladra at La Scala. Ninetta is a soprano part, which is a higher female voice.
However, her most successful roles were the contralto parts in Rossini's operas. These included La Cenerentola, Tancredi, and Isabella in L'italiana in Algeri. These roles truly showed off her amazing low singing voice.
Later Life and Retirement
In 1818, Belloc-Giorgi performed in London, England. She used the name Bellochi there. However, she did not find much success in London and soon returned to Milan.
She later married a Frenchman. In 1828, she decided to stop singing and retired from her career. Maria Teresa Belloc-Giorgi passed away in San Giorgio Canavese on May 13, 1855.
