Teresa Maryańska (1937 – 3 October 2019) was a Polish paleontologist. This means she was a scientist who studied dinosaurs and other ancient life forms. She was especially good at studying dinosaurs from Mongolia. She focused on two main groups: pachycephalosaurs (dinosaurs with thick, bony skulls) and ankylosaurs (armored dinosaurs).
In 1974, Teresa Maryańska and her colleague Halszka Osmólska were among the first women to discover and name new types of dinosaurs. She is known as one of the world's top experts on dinosaurs.
Discovering Dinosaurs
Teresa Maryańska was part of several important trips to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. These trips happened in 1964, 1965, 1970, and 1971. During these expeditions, she found many amazing dinosaur fossils. She often worked with Halszka Osmólska to study and describe these finds.
Dinosaurs She Described
Teresa Maryańska helped to describe many new dinosaurs. To "describe" a dinosaur means to officially identify it as a new species and give it a name. Some of the dinosaurs she helped name include:
- Saichania and Tarchia (in 1977)
- With Halszka Osmólska, she described Homalocephale, Prenocephale, and Tylocephale (all pachycephalosaurs) in 1974.
- They also described Bagaceratops (in 1975) and Barsboldia (in 1981).
- With Osmólska and Altangerel Perle, she described Goyocephale (in 1982).
She also worked on a big study of oviraptorosaurs in 2002. These are a group of bird-like dinosaurs.
Her Work and Legacy
Teresa Maryańska wrote many important scientific papers. She also helped write three chapters for a very respected book called The Dinosauria. Her chapters were about the therizinosaurs, ankylosaurs, and pachycephalosaurs. These contributions helped other scientists learn more about these dinosaur groups.
She worked at the Museum of the Earth in Poland. She was also the assistant director there. Teresa Maryańska passed away on October 3, 2019, at the age of 82. Her work greatly helped us understand more about dinosaurs.
