Terranova's History
How Puerto Rico Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the U.S. This means it is part of the U.S. but has its own special government.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 779 people lived in the Terranova barrio at that time.
Understanding Terranova's Sections
What are Sectors?
Barrios like Terranova are divided into smaller areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (say: sek-TOR-es). You can think of them like neighborhoods or smaller communities within the barrio.
Types of Sectors
Sectors can have different names depending on what they are like. Some are simply called "sector." Others might be called "urbanización" (a planned neighborhood) or "residencial" (a housing complex). Terranova has many different sectors. Some examples include Sector Estación, Sector Juan González, and Parcelas Terranova.
