Terence John Lyons FRSE FRS is a British mathematician. He is an expert in stochastic analysis. This is a field of math that studies things that change randomly.

Terry Lyons was a special professor of mathematics at the University of Oxford. He is also a member of St Anne's College, Oxford. He works at The Alan Turing Institute. He led the Oxford-Man Institute from 2011 to 2015. He was also the president of the London Mathematical Society from 2013 to 2015.

His math work helps us understand probability. This is the chance of things happening. He also works on how to solve math problems using computers. He created a special idea called "rough paths." This helps understand very wiggly and unpredictable movements. He also helped show how computer programs called neural networks can learn complex patterns.

Education and Early Life

Terry Lyons studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He earned his first degree there. Later, he got his advanced degree (D.Phil) from the University of Oxford.

Career Highlights

Terry Lyons has worked at many famous universities. These include UCLA and Imperial College London. He also taught at the University of Edinburgh. Since 2000, he has been a professor at the University of Oxford.

He was the director of the Oxford-Man Institute at Oxford. This was from June 2011 to December 2015. He also visited and taught at many places in Europe and North America.

He has written important math books. One book is called System Control and Rough Paths. Another is Differential Equations Driven by Rough Paths. These books help other mathematicians learn about his ideas.

Awards and Recognition

Terry Lyons has received many awards for his math work.

  • In 1985, he won the Rollo Davidson Prize.
  • In 1986, he received the Whitehead Prize from the London Mathematical Society.
  • In 2000, he was given the Pólya Prize by the London Mathematical Society.

He was chosen to be a fellow of several important groups. These include the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1988. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2002. He also became a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2005. In 2011, he became a fellow of the Learned Society of Wales. In 2013, he was elected president of the London Mathematical Society.

Many universities have given him special honorary degrees. These include the University of Toulouse in 2007. He also received honors from Aberystwyth University in 2010 and Cardiff University in 2012. In 2017, he received an honorary math degree from the University of Waterloo.
