Tevin Ford Coleman (born April 16, 1993) is an American former professional football player. He played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the NFL, he played college football for the Indiana Hoosiers. In 2014, he was recognized as a unanimous All-American, which is a big honor. The Atlanta Falcons chose him in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets.

Early Life and High School Sports

Tevin Coleman grew up in Oak Forest, Illinois. He went to Oak Forest High School. There, he was a star athlete in both football and track and field.

Football Achievements in High School

In high school football, Tevin played many positions. He was a running back, wide receiver, and cornerback. He also returned kicks and punts. In his senior year, he ran for 949 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He also caught 16 passes for 345 yards and five touchdowns. He was named the 2011 Southtown Star Player of the Year.

Track and Field Success

Tevin was also a top sprinter and jumper on his school's track & field team. He was one of the best 100-meter sprinters and long-jumpers in Illinois. In 2011, he finished fourth in the 100-meter dash and second in the long jump at the state championships. His best long jump was 7.16 meters. He ran the 100 meters in a super fast 10.5 seconds.

Choosing a College Team

Experts thought Tevin was a good player, ranking him as one of the best running backs in 2012. He decided to play college football for Indiana University. He chose Indiana over other big schools like Georgia Tech and Michigan State.

Starting Out in College

As a freshman in 2012, Tevin played in 12 games. He ran for 225 yards and scored one touchdown. He also returned kicks for 566 yards and another touchdown. In 2013, as a sophomore, he started nine games. He ran for 958 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He missed the last three games due to an ankle sprain.

Breaking Records in Junior Year (2014)

Tevin had an amazing junior season in 2014.

  • In his first game, he ran for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
  • He had several other games with over 150 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns.
  • On November 15, he ran for 307 yards against Rutgers. This was the second-highest rushing total in his school's history.
  • He finished the 2014 season with an incredible 2,036 rushing yards. This broke the school's single-season record.
  • He became only the 18th player in NCAA Division I FBS history to run for over 2,000 yards in one season.
  • Tevin was also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, which goes to the best running back in college football.
  • He finished seventh in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, a very prestigious award for college players.

Professional Football Career

Tevin Coleman was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 2015. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets.

Atlanta Falcons (2015–2018)

The Atlanta Falcons picked Tevin in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year contract with them.

2015 Season Highlights

Tevin made his NFL debut on September 14, 2015. He ran for 80 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. A week later, he scored his first NFL touchdown against the New York Giants. He had his first 100-yard rushing game against the Minnesota Vikings, running for 110 yards. In his first year, he rushed for 392 yards and one touchdown.

2016 Season Highlights

In 2016, Tevin showed his skills as a receiver too. He caught five passes for 95 yards in the first game. He scored his first touchdown of the season against the Oakland Raiders. On September 26, he scored a career-high three touchdowns against the New Orleans Saints. He also had a career-high 132 receiving yards and his first touchdown catch against the Denver Broncos.

Tevin played in Super Bowl LI with the Falcons. He scored a touchdown in the Super Bowl, but his team lost to the New England Patriots. He was very efficient, gaining 6.3 yards every time he touched the ball, which was second-best among NFL running backs with many touches.

2017 Season Highlights

In 2017, Tevin scored the first receiving touchdown in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium during a game against the Green Bay Packers. He had another game with multiple touchdowns against the Buccaneers, running for 97 yards and two scores. He finished the season with 628 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. He also had 299 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. The Falcons made the playoffs, winning against the Los Angeles Rams but losing to the Eagles.

2018 Season Highlights

In 2018, Tevin had his second career game with over 100 rushing yards against the Carolina Panthers. He became the main running back for the rest of the season after another player got injured. In Week 15, he ran for a career-high 145 yards against the Arizona Cardinals. He finished the season with a career-high 800 rushing yards and five receiving touchdowns. This was the first time he gained over 1,000 total yards from scrimmage in his career.

San Francisco 49ers (2019–2020)

In 2019, Tevin signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

2019 Season Highlights

He started the season with the 49ers, but a high-ankle sprain kept him out for four weeks. When he returned, he ran for 97 yards and a touchdown against the Cleveland Browns. Three weeks later, he had an amazing game against the Panthers, running for 105 yards and scoring four touchdowns! He was only the third 49ers player ever to score four touchdowns in one game. He finished the season with 544 rushing yards and six touchdowns.

In the playoffs, Tevin continued to play well. He ran for 105 yards and two touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings. In the NFC Championship game against the Packers, he got a shoulder injury but the 49ers still won and went to Super Bowl LIV. In the Super Bowl, the 49ers lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

2020 Season

In 2020, Tevin suffered a sprained knee early in the season and was placed on injured reserve. He returned later in the season.

New York Jets (2021)

In 2021, Tevin signed a one-year contract with the New York Jets. He played in 11 games and was second on the team in rushing yards with 356. He did not score any touchdowns that season. He was released by the Jets in August 2022.

San Francisco 49ers (Second Time, 2022)

Tevin returned to the San Francisco 49ers in September 2022, joining their practice squad. He was later moved to the main roster. In Week 5, he scored both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown against the Panthers. He was released again in October but re-signed to the practice squad. His contract ended after the season in January 2023.
