Music Career
Early Years
Christian Büttner didn't always plan to make electronic music. At first, he wanted to be a conductor for a classical orchestra. In 2001, he started producing music using his real name. He created background music for TV shows, radio, and commercials. He also made music for other DJs to use in their sets.
In 2010, he produced a song called Mignon Mignon which became a number-one hit in France. He also worked on the song "Audubon Ballroom" for Lupe Fiasco's album Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.
Becoming TheFatRat
In July 2011, Büttner decided to create music for himself under the name TheFatRat. He started with his first EP, Do Be Do Be Do. His music quickly became popular online. By 2016, his songs were used in over 1.5 million YouTube videos.
In November 2016, he released his second EP, Jackpot, which was a big success. Around the same time, he started his own record label called The Arcadium.
Over the next few years, he released popular singles like "Fly Away" (2017) and "MAYDAY" (2018). He also performed at big music events like the Electric Forest Festival.
Music for Gamers and YouTubers
Dota 2 Music Pack
TheFatRat is very popular in the video game world. In July 2018, he released "Warrior Songs," a special music pack for the popular game Dota 2. Players could buy the pack to hear his music while they played. This made his songs even more famous among gamers.
Fighting for Creators on YouTube
In December 2018, Büttner shared a story about a problem with YouTube's copyright system. An unknown user had unfairly claimed his song "The Calling" and was taking all the money it made. YouTube at first did not help him solve the problem.
After he made a video about it, the YouTube community supported him, and YouTube removed the false claim. To thank his fans, TheFatRat announced that all his music would be free for anyone to use in their creative videos on YouTube without worrying about copyright issues.
Recent Projects
In February 2020, the website Redbull.com released a short documentary about TheFatRat's career. Later that month, he released a science-fiction music video for his song "The Storm," which was filmed in the amazing landscapes of Iceland.
In 2021, he released his album PARALLAX. Instead of releasing all the songs at once, he released one new song every week for ten weeks.
As of mid-2025, TheFatRat's YouTube channel has grown to over 6.6 million subscribers and has more than 2.1 billion total views.
