The Adventures of the American Rabbit is an animated film from 1986. It was made in America, Britain, and Japan. The movie was directed by Fred Wolf and Nobutaka Nishizawa. It tells the story of a rabbit named Rob who becomes a superhero.

The Story of the American Rabbit

Rob's Secret Power

The movie starts when Robert Rabbit, or Rob, is born. A mysterious old rabbit with a cane greets baby Rob and then vanishes. This old rabbit keeps appearing as Rob grows up. He always asks about Rob's skills and personality.

One day, Rob's parents are in danger from a falling rock. Rob runs to help them. As he runs, he changes into a superhero! He wears stripes and stars and has golden rollerskates. The old rabbit appears again. He tells Rob that he is the American Rabbit. Rob can become this superhero when he runs fast. He changes back to normal when he says his own name.

Life in the City

Rob decides to keep his superpowers a secret. He moves to a big city. He finds a job playing piano at a nightclub called the Panda Monium. The club is owned by a panda named Teddy and a female rabbit named Bunny O'Hare.

A group of jackals causes trouble for the club. They are like a gang that demands money for "protection." Teddy refuses to pay them. So, the jackals ride their motorcycles into the club. They wreck the place during a show.

Fighting the Jackals

Bunny and Teddy plan a march and a rally. Walt (Kenneth Mars), the jackals' boss, orders them to cause trouble during the march. Walt's buzzard destroys the cables holding up a bridge. The marchers are crossing this bridge! But the American Rabbit arrives and stops the bridge from falling.

Teddy then announces a cross-country music tour. He plans to raise money to rebuild the Panda Monium. Walt is angry and orders the jackals to kidnap a gorilla (Lorenzo Music) named Ping Pong. They want to force Ping Pong to fight the American Rabbit.

The jackals take Ping Pong to a secret hideout in the Grand Canyon. They threaten to drown him if he doesn't fight. Rob finds out Ping Pong is missing. He sends his friends rafting down the river. The jackals capture Rob, but he changes into the American Rabbit. He rescues Ping Pong.

Adventures in New York

Rob and his friends travel to New Orleans. They plan to play music at some clubs there. Walt and the jackals trap them on a boat and set it on fire. Rob becomes the American Rabbit and gets everyone off the boat before it explodes.

Bunny worries about Rob, but the American Rabbit promises to find him. He also promises to learn more about the fire. He follows Walt and the jackals. He overhears them talking about going to New York for their big plan. The American Rabbit dives into the water. He changes back into Rob and swims to shore. Rob suggests that the group go to New York. Teddy has friends there who can help them get new instruments.

The Final Showdown

In New York, Walt and the jackals capture a chocolate-making moose and his son. They rent the Statue of Liberty for a day. They rig it with dynamite. Walt threatens to blow up the people visiting if they don't obey him.

The American Rabbit finds the dynamite. He follows Walt's voice to his hiding spot and defeats him. It turns out "Walt" is actually the buzzard, Vultor. Vultor perches on the dynamite detonator. He forces the American Rabbit to fly around the Statue of Liberty. The Rabbit has to announce that Vultor and the jackals control the city. He says those who obey will get chocolate. Rob feels very ashamed. He disappears from public view.

With the American Rabbit gone, Vultor and the jackals take over New York. But they fail to keep their promises. The people turn against them. Teddy, Bunny, Ping Pong, and the White Brothers free the moose and his son. Vultor gets angry at the jackals. He plans to destroy the American Rabbit and the city with a special switch.

Rob is still upset about his defeat. He takes a taxi. The taxi driver is the elderly rabbit from the beginning of the film. He tells Rob, "You can't win 'em all, but you can make a power play of your own." Rob sees a poster for Niagara Falls. This gives him an idea.

He uses his powers to create a force field. This stops the water that powers New York's electricity. The power goes out, and Vultor's switch stops working. A furious Vultor faces the American Rabbit. The Rabbit chases Vultor into a snowstorm. Vultor tries one last attack but misses. He falls to his death.

The American Rabbit changes back into Rob. He reunites with his friends. Bunny O'Hare gives him a kiss.
