The Banquet, also known as Party of a Wealthy Family, is a 1991 Hong Kong comedy film. It was made very quickly to help raise money for flood relief. In July 1991, the Yangtze River in China flooded badly. This caused many deaths and forced many people to leave their homes.
Many actors and crew members worked on this film. They all helped out for the charity cause. The main star of the movie is Eric Tsang.
What the Movie is About
Developer Tsang Siu-Chi (Eric Tsang) and his helper (Jacky Cheung) want to buy four properties. Another developer, Boss Hung (Sammo Hung), owns two of them. Both Tsang and Hung want all four properties. They plan to knock them down and build new hotels.
Tsang's helper finds out that a rich prince, Prince Allabarba (George Lam), is coming to Hong Kong. The prince's father recently passed away. The prince feels sad that he was not a good son.
The helper tells Tsang to pretend he has a great relationship with his own father. This way, he can impress the prince and get a big business deal. The problem is, Tsang has not seen his father (Richard Ng) in 10 years!
Tsang, his wife (Carol Cheng), and his assistant (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) go to find his father. Tsang even pretends to have a serious illness to convince his father to come home. His sister (Rosamund Kwan) and her husband (Tony Leung Ka Fai) also come along.
Tsang throws a big party, pretending it is his father's birthday. He wants to impress the prince. But it turns out the helper was secretly working for Boss Hung all along!
