Band History

How the Band Started (2005–2006)

The Devil Wears Prada formed in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. They got their name from a story with the same title. When they started, all the band members were Christian. Their music often had themes related to their faith.

The band played their first show in 2005. Soon after, Jeremy DePoyster joined as rhythm guitarist and Andy Trick joined as bassist. They played many local shows in Dayton. Later that year, they recorded their first demo, called Patterns of a Horizon.

About a year later, Rise Records signed the band. The band was not happy with their demo. So, they re-recorded all the songs for their first full album. This album was called Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord. It was released on August 22, 2006. After the album came out, the band started touring across the country. They even played at the 2006 Cornerstone Festival, which is a big Christian music event.

Success with Plagues (2007–2008)

Even though Dear Love had just come out, The Devil Wears Prada already had new songs ready by the end of 2006. They recorded their second album, Plagues, in early 2007. It was released on August 21, 2007.

Two songs from the album, "HTML Rulez D00d" and "Hey John, What's Your Name Again?", became singles. They also had music videos that played on TV channels like MTV. Plagues was very successful. It reached No. 57 on the Billboard 200 music chart in September 2007. This album sold over 30,000 more copies than their first album.

New Sounds with With Roots Above and Branches Below (2008–2010)

The band started writing their third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below, after playing at the Warped Tour in 2008. Vocalist Mike Hranica said the new album would be "much heavier and more epic." Keyboardist James Baney added that it would sound more "mechanical" but still keep their unique style.

They played a new song from the album, "Dez Moines," in March 2009. The band also performed at the Warped Tour 2009 to promote the album. With Roots Above and Branches Below was released on May 5, 2009. It sold very well, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart.

In early 2010, readers of Alternative Press magazine voted The Devil Wears Prada as the "Band of the Year" for 2009. They even appeared on the magazine's cover.

Zombie EP and Dead Throne (2010–2013)

In April 2010, the band announced they were recording a short album, called an EP. They said it would be "fun" and have "brutal" songs. This EP was named Zombie and was released on August 23, 2010.

By January 2011, Mike Hranica shared ideas for their fourth full album. He said it would be a "heavy-focused sound" like the Zombie EP, but also include their usual melodies. The album was not a story-based album. Instead, it had a main theme about being against idolatry, which means worshipping things or people instead of God.

The album was called Dead Throne. It came out on September 13, 2011, through Ferret Music. It was a big success, selling over 32,000 copies in its first week. Dead Throne reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. It also topped the Christian and Independent album charts.

In February 2012, keyboard player James Baney left the band. The band later released a CD/DVD album called Dead and Alive in June 2012.

8:18 and Changes (2013–2015)

In January 2012, Mike Hranica said the band was working on their fifth album. He mentioned it would be "darker" and "more sad" than Dead Throne. He also said guitarist Chris Rubey had created some "relentless" music.

On February 20, 2013, the band announced that Chris Rubey would miss some tours. This was because he needed to be with his newborn child. Samuel Penner filled in for him.

The new album was titled 8:18 and was released on September 17, 2013.

New Labels and Members (2015–2018)

On March 7, 2015, the band signed again with Rise Records. Ten days later, founding guitarist Chris Rubey left the band. They then announced a new EP called Space.

Before the Space EP was released, Mike Hranica announced that Kyle Sipress, who used to be the band's guitar technician, was their new guitarist. The Space EP came out on August 21, 2015. In July 2016, drummer Daniel Williams left the band.

Later in July 2016, Giuseppe Capolupo said he had recorded drums for the band's next album. This album, Transit Blues, was released on October 7, 2016. Mike Hranica said he hoped Giuseppe Capolupo would become a permanent member. In September 2018, the band signed with Solid State Records.

Recent Albums and a Sad Loss (2019–Present)

In 2019, Jonathan Gering and Giuseppe Capolupo officially joined the band. They helped record the new album, The Act, which was released in October 2019. Jonathan Gering also helped write and produce the songs.

In September 2020, the band shared that bassist Andy Trick had left. Mason Nagy, who had toured with them before, became the new bassist. In April 2021, they announced a new EP called ZII. This EP was a follow-up to their 2010 Zombie EP. It was about feeling hopeless and was partly inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 7, 2022, the band announced their eighth studio album, Color Decay. It was released on September 16, 2022.

Sadly, on May 22, 2025, former drummer Daniel Williams died in a private plane crash in San Diego. The band shared a statement saying, "No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever." Jeremy DePoyster also said, "This hurts really bad. Rest easy boys. I love you. We’ll see each other again."

Band Style and Meaning

In their early years, The Devil Wears Prada's music was called metalcore and Christian metal. Some people described their sound as mixing American metalcore with European melodic metal. Their Christian beliefs and the themes in their songs also led to them being called a "Christian metalcore" band.

The band's name, The Devil Wears Prada, is from a novel. The band actually formed before the movie with the same name came out. They chose the name because they wanted to show an anti-materialism message. Materialism is when people care too much about owning things. They thought the novel was about this idea. Later, they found out the novel wasn't really about anti-materialism. But they decided to keep the name anyway. They wanted it to mean that on the Last Judgment day, God would not care about what people owned.

In 2021, Kyle Sipress said that the band has not called themselves a Christian band for a long time. He explained that most of the members are not Christians anymore. However, they still aim to make music that is fun to play.
