The Band's Journey
How the Band Started and First Album (2005–2006)
The Devil Wears Prada formed in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. They got their name from a story with the same title. When they started, all the band members were Christian, and their music often had themes about their faith. They played their first show in 2005. Soon after, Jeremy DePoyster (rhythm guitar) and Andy Trick (bass) joined the band. They played local shows in Dayton before recording their first demo, Patterns of a Horizon, later that year.
A year later, Rise Records signed the band. The band was not happy with their demo, so they re-recorded all the songs for their first full album, Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord. This album was recorded with Joey Sturgis and came out on August 22, 2006. After the album was released, the band started touring across the country. They even played at the 2006 Cornerstone Festival, which is a big Christian music event.
Second Album: Plagues (2007–2008)

After Dear Love came out in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada already had new songs ready for their second album by winter. They recorded from late 2006 into spring 2007. Their second album, Plagues, was finished by summer and released on August 21, 2007. They shared a demo of "HTML Rulez D00d" online to promote the album.
Two songs from the album, "HTML Rulez D00d" and "Hey John, What's Your Name Again?", became singles. Music videos for these songs were shown on TV channels like MTV. Plagues was very successful, selling many more copies than their first album. It was even re-released later with a DVD that included music videos and live performances. The band also recorded a cover of the song "Still Fly" by Big Tymers for a compilation album.
Third Album: With Roots Above and Branches Below (2008–2010)
The band started working on their third album, With Roots Above and Branches Below, after playing at the 2008 Warped Tour. Before recording, vocalist Mike Hranica said the album would be "much heavier and more epic." Keyboardist James Baney added that it would be more "mechanical" but still sound like them. Drummer Daniel Williams thought it would be "crazier and wilder."
In late 2008, they played a new song from the album while on tour. They also performed at the 2009 Warped Tour to promote the new music. On March 13, they released a song called "Dez Moines" from the album. With Roots Above and Branches Below was released on May 5, 2009. It sold very well, reaching No. 11 on the Billboard 200 chart. "Dez Moines" was even available to download for the video game Guitar Hero World Tour.
The band also played at the iMatter Festival in New York. In 2010, Alternative Press magazine named The Devil Wears Prada "Band of the Year." They also released a music video for "Assistant to the Regional Manager" on April 6, 2010.
Zombie EP and Dead Throne (2010–2013)
In early April, the band shared that they were recording an EP before their "Back to the Roots Tour." They described the EP as a "fun" release with "brutal" songs. The EP was named Zombie and came out on August 23. After the EP was done, the band started their tour.
By January 2011, Mike Hranica talked about their plans for their fourth full album. He said it would have a "heavy-focused sound" like the Zombie EP, but also include their usual melodies. The album would not be a story album, but it would have a main theme about being against idolatry (worshipping things instead of God).
The album was called Dead Throne and was released on September 13, 2011. It was a big success, selling over 32,000 copies in its first week. It reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. Dead Throne also topped the Christian and Independent album charts.
The band joined the Mayhem Festival tour in 2012. During this tour, on February 22, 2012, keyboard player James Baney left the band. The band released a CD/DVD album called Dead and Alive on June 26, 2012.
8:18 (2013–2015)
On January 25, 2012, Mike Hranica announced that the band was working on their fifth album. He said it would be darker than Dead Throne and have sadder lyrics. Hranica was also excited about the new keyboard parts, describing them as "very dark and intense" after James Baney's departure.
On February 20, 2013, the band shared that guitarist Chris Rubey would miss some touring because of his newborn child. Samuel Penner filled in for him.
The band announced on Facebook that their new album would be titled 8:18. It was released on September 17, 2013.
New Labels, Member Changes, and Transit Blues (2015–2018)
On March 7, 2015, the band signed again with Rise Records. Ten days later, they announced that founding guitarist Chris Rubey had left the band. They also said they would release a new EP called Space. The band toured to celebrate the five-year anniversary of their Zombie EP. They released a new song from Space called "Supernova" on June 18, followed by "Alien" on August 4. Before the EP came out, Hranica announced that Kyle Sipress, their former guitar tech, was the new guitarist. The Space EP was released on August 21. On July 2, 2016, drummer Daniel Williams left the band.
On July 18, 2016, Giuseppe Capolupo, a drummer from other bands, said he had recorded for The Devil Wears Prada's next album. The band's sixth studio album, Transit Blues, was released on October 7, 2016. Mike Hranica said that Giuseppe Capolupo would likely become a permanent member. In 2017, the band toured with Anthrax and Killswitch Engage. On September 24, 2018, they signed with Solid State Records.
Recent Albums and Changes (2019–present)
In 2019, Jonathan Gering and Giuseppe Capolupo officially joined the band. They helped record the new album, with Gering also helping with songwriting and production.
On September 23, 2020, the band announced that bassist Andy Trick had left and Mason Nagy, who had toured with them before, was his replacement. On April 7, 2021, they announced a new EP called ZII. This EP is a follow-up to their 2010 Zombie EP. It is about feeling hopeless and was partly inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic.
On June 7, 2022, the band announced that their eighth studio album, Color Decay, would be released on September 16.
On May 22, 2025, former drummer Daniel Williams passed away. The band shared a statement saying, "No words. We owe you everything. Love you forever."
Band Style and Meaning
In their early years, some people described The Devil Wears Prada's music as metalcore, Christian hardcore, and Christian metal. Their music was known for mixing American metalcore with European melodic metal. Because the band members were Christian and their songs had religious themes, their style was also called "Christian metalcore."
Many people thought the band got its name from the movie. But the band actually formed before the movie came out! They got their name from the book The Devil Wears Prada. They chose the name to show an anti-materialism message. They thought the book was about how owning too many things isn't important. Later, they realized the book wasn't really about that. But they decided to keep the name anyway. For them, it means that at the Last Judgment, God won't care about what people owned.
In 2021, Kyle Sipress said that the band has not called themselves a Christian band for a long time. He explained that most of the members are not Christians now, but they still want to make music that is fun to play!
