A Look Back: The History of Cornerstone Festival
Early Years in Illinois
From 1984 to 1990, the Cornerstone Festival was held at the Lake County Fairgrounds. This location was near Grayslake, Illinois. In 1991, the festival moved to a new spot. This new location was near the town of Bushnell, which is close to Macomb. The people who organized the festival bought a large piece of land there. They called this land "Cornerstone Farm."
Music and More at Cornerstone Farm
Tens of thousands of people visited Cornerstone Farm every year. They came to see over 300 bands play many different kinds of music. This included rock, metal, punk, hardcore, and pop music. But Cornerstone Festival was more than just music. It also had guest speakers who shared their ideas. There were screenings of independent and foreign films. People could also attend workshops for writers and artists.
Changes to the Main Stage
In 2010, the festival's main stage moved to a new area. This new spot was called the "Midway." It was about 0.7 miles northeast of where the main stage used to be. The old spot was known as the "bowl."
Special Performances and the Final Festival
The 2011 festival featured a special event called a "Jesus Rally." This rally showcased many of the early and important Jesus music artists. Some of the famous performers included Servant, Daniel Amos, Randy Stonehill, Barry McGuire, Resurrection Band, Phil Keaggy, and Classic Petra.
On May 15, 2012, it was announced that the 2012 festival would be the very last one. The final song ever performed at Cornerstone was "To Bid Farewell." This song was played on July 7, 2012. It was performed by Derri Daugherty and Steve Hindalong from the band The Choir.
