The Grove is a popular outdoor shopping and entertainment center in Los Angeles. It is built on land that was once part of the historic Farmers Market. The Grove offers many stores, including Nordstrom and Barnes & Noble, along with restaurants and a movie theater. It's a fun place where people can shop, eat, and enjoy special events.

The Grove's History
The land where The Grove now stands was once an orchard and a plant nursery. This was the last part of a dairy farm owned by A. F. Gilmore in the late 1800s. Developers started building the new mall in 1999.
Some people worried that the new mall would make traffic worse in an already busy part of Los Angeles. There were already other shopping areas nearby, like the Beverly Center. The Grove officially opened its doors in 2002.
TV Shows at The Grove
From 2010 to 2013, the TV news show Extra was filmed at The Grove. It often used the mall's grassy lawn area. Also, from 2015 to 2017, The Grove hosted the fall finale shows for Dancing with the Stars.
Building the Mall
The idea for developing the Gilmore property changed over the years. In 1989, A. F. Gilmore announced plans for a large mall next to the Farmers Market. This project was going to have many stores.
Later, in 1998, A. F. Gilmore partnered with Caruso Affiliated to create a smaller plan. This new plan became The Grove at Farmers Market. Nordstrom agreed to open a large store in 2001. Other early stores included FAO Schwarz, Banana Republic, Gap, Barnes & Noble, and a movie complex. The shopping center finally opened in March 2002.
Changes Over Time
Some stores at The Grove have changed since it opened. FAO Schwarz closed in 2004 and was replaced by American Girl Place in 2006. Abercrombie & Fitch closed its main store in 2015. A Nike flagship store opened in its place later that year. In 2013, Banana Republic moved to a new spot, and a Topshop/Topman store took over its old space.
The 14-screen movie theater was originally going to be built by Pacific Theatres. However, Caruso decided to build it themselves. After running it successfully, Caruso sold the movie theater to Pacific Theatres. In 2021, Pacific Theatres closed permanently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AMC Theatres then took over the movie theater at The Grove in July 2021.
In May 2020, The Grove experienced damage during protests. Caruso, the owner, shared a letter supporting the cause of the demonstrators. He also spoke about the importance of preventing violence that harmed many small businesses nearby.
The Grove's Design
The Grove is a large outdoor shopping area located in Los Angeles' Fairfax District. Its design was inspired by classic Los Angeles buildings and historic areas. It features shopping alleys, wide open spaces, and cozy courtyards. The buildings have an Art Deco style with decorative fronts.
The design focuses on visitors who arrive by car. There is a large parking structure with 3,500 spaces.
Fun Attractions
The Grove has a big central park with a special animated fountain. This fountain was designed by WET, the same company that designed the famous Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas. The fountain puts on a music and water show every hour.
You can also see a statue called The Spirit of Los Angeles at The Grove. Live shows are often held on the grassy area near the fountains. An electric trolley system connects The Grove to the nearby Farmers Market, making it easy to visit both places.
The Farmers Market offers 28 restaurants with many different types of food. You can find American, Mexican, Asian, Brazilian, French, Italian, Japanese, and other delicious cuisines there.
Christmas Tree Fun
Every year in mid-November, a huge Grove Christmas Tree is put up at The Grove. It is lit up each evening, starting with a special tree lighting ceremony. This tree stays lit throughout the Christmas season. It is often 100 feet tall or more, making it one of the tallest Christmas trees in Los Angeles. During the holidays, The Grove also becomes a "winter wonderland" with artificial snow falling every evening.
