This book was even recognized as a Newbery Honor book in 2017!

What's the Story About?

This novel has a unique way of telling its story. Different people share parts of the tale. These storytellers are all travelers staying at the Holy Cross-Roads Inn, near Paris. The year is 1242.

Meet the Storytellers

  • Marie, a brewer, starts by telling us about a girl named Jeanne. Jeanne has a special dog, a greyhound named Gwenforte.
  • Next, a monk from the Monastery Saint-Martin introduces William. The monk is a librarian there.
  • Finally, Aron, a butcher, tells us about Jacob. Aron is from a town called Nogent-sur-Oise.

Each person at the inn encourages the others to share their part of the story. The parts of the book that happen at the inn are told by Étienne. He works for the Pope's Holy Inquisition.

The Magical Children

The three main characters, Jeanne, William, and Jacob, each have an amazing power:

  • Jeanne can see things that will happen in the future.
  • William is super strong and very big for his age.
  • Jacob can heal almost any injury very quickly.

On the Run

These three children get into trouble with King Louis IX of France. The King's agents start chasing them. This happens after the children get involved in events following a big argument in Paris. During this time, many copies of an important Jewish book called the Talmud were burned. Because of their actions, the children become outlaws, trying to avoid the King's men.
