The Knux Story: How They Started
Growing Up and Making Music
The Lindsey brothers, Krispy and Joey, grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, with their mom. At first, they weren't super close. Joey remembers being more of a "nerd" who liked video games, while Krispy was more popular and liked to hang out with friends. Krispy, though, has a different memory of their childhood!
Even though they lived in the same house and both loved marching band (which helped them get really good at playing instruments), they hung out with different groups of friends in high school. Joey says that Nas's album It Was Written (1996) was the first rap album he truly listened to. But it was the Gravediggaz album The Pick, the Sickle and the Shovel (1997) that really brought them together. Joey said, "I bought that tape and we'd just sit around after school listening to it all afternoon."
Within a year of spending time together and writing rap lyrics, they started working with an uncle who was a music producer in their town. They began making songs together. Krispy shared, "We started off calling ourselves The Knuckle Heads and we'd go over to his studio to make beats and songs." Later, after Hurricane Katrina hit their hometown, the brothers moved to Los Angeles, California.
First Album: Remind Me in 3 Days... (2006–2008)
The Knux started getting noticed in 2007. They were the opening act for rapper Common's "Finding Forever Tour." On February 19, 2008, their song "Cappuccino" was officially released by Interscope Records. This song was even featured in an episode of the TV show Entourage and in the movie Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. They also made a music video for "Cappuccino."
With songs like "Bang, Bang" and "Cappuccino" getting attention, their first album, Remind Me in 3 Days..., came out in 2008. The album reached number 23 on the U.S. Top Heatseekers chart, which lists popular new artists.
Second Album: Eraser (2009–2011)
After touring a lot in 2009 to promote their first album, The Knux went back to the studio in 2010 to work on their second album. On January 2, 2010, they released their first extended play (EP), which is a shorter music release than an album.
They later announced that their second album would be called Eraser. They chose this name because they wanted to change their image. Krispy explained, "With this album, we want to take those preconceived notions and shatter and erase them." The album was recorded with Robert Orton, who has worked with famous artists like The Police and Lady Gaga.
On February 9, 2011, the song "She's So Up" was shared online, and it became the first single from the album. On July 12, 2011, The Knux released their second single, "Run," which featured the artist Kid Cudi. Unlike their first album, Eraser included guest artists like Natalia Kills and Kid Cudi. The album was released on September 27, 2011.
Later Projects: KTWN and Eleven (2012–Present)
On July 27, 2012, The Knux released a new song called "Animal." This song was part of their new project, KTWN. The name KTWN stands for Koreatown, a neighborhood in downtown Los Angeles where The Knux now live. "Animal" showed off their high-energy rapping, singing, and guitar playing.
Throughout August and September 2012, the duo toured in the U.S. They also shared plans to bring their exciting live show to Japan, the U.K., and Paris. On November 7, 2012, "Toke Up," another song from KTWN, was released. Their second EP, KTWN, came out on November 26, 2012. On April 28, 2015, The Knux released Eleven, which is their third studio album.
