Teddy Sinclair facts for kids
Natalia Noemi "Teddy" Sinclair (born 15 August 1986) is a British singer, songwriter, and actress. She has used different names for her music, like Natalia Kills and Verbalicious. Currently, she is the lead singer of the band Cruel Youth. This band also releases music as The Powder Room.
As Natalia Kills, Sinclair signed a big music deal with will.i.am Music Group, KonLive Distribution, and Cherrytree Records. She released her first album, Perfectionist, in 2011. This album included popular songs like "Mirrors" and "Free". Both songs were certified gold, meaning they sold a lot of copies.
Even though Perfectionist didn't sell as much as hoped, her next album, Trouble (2013), did a bit better in the United States. In 2015, she started using the name Teddy. The next year, she formed her band Cruel Youth. They released an album called +30mg in 2016.
Besides her own songs, Sinclair has written music for famous artists like Madonna and Rihanna. She was even nominated for a Grammy Award in 2017. This was for helping write Rihanna's song "Kiss It Better". In March 2015, Sinclair and her husband, Willy Moon, were judges on the TV show New Zealand X Factor. They were asked to leave the show because of some very strong comments they made to a contestant.

About Teddy Sinclair
Her Early Life and Start in Music
Natalia Noemi Cappuccini was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. Her father was from Jamaica, and her mother was from Uruguay. She went to Bradford Girls' Grammar School. When she was young, her family moved often between England, Jamaica, and Spain.
At 14, she left home and decided to focus on music instead of acting.
She started her music journey and had a big moment in 2003. She won a BBC Radio 1 MC Battle in Leeds as "Candy Rapper". Her song 'Next Big Me', released as Verbalicious, was in the movie Sleepover in 2004. In 2005, she signed with Adventures in Music. She released her first single, "Don't Play Nice", under the name Verbalicious. Sinclair shared that her childhood nickname from her mother was "Verbal". This was because she talked and sang a lot. She later used this name and its variations for her stage names.
In 2007, while writing music for films, she put a demo called Womannequin on MySpace. She produced and wrote this demo under the name Natalia Cappuccini. It got 2 million plays and reached the top of the unsigned artists chart. Around this time, using the name Verse, she also helped write and sang on "They Talk ... About Me" by French artist M. Pokora. She also met Guillaume Doubet, who would direct many of her music videos.
Sinclair moved to Los Angeles in 2008. She arrived without much money or a place to live. She stayed in motels and tried to work with anyone who would let her use their studio. In L.A., a DJ introduced her to will.i.am after hearing her music. In January 2009, will.i.am signed her to his record label, will.i.am Music Group. She said in 2011 that they had a great creative connection.
Her Music Career Highlights
Sinclair started using the stage name Natalia Kills. Her record company thought her birth name was too hard to remember. She released her first album, Perfectionist, in Germany in April 2011. Her first single, "Mirrors", was a Top 10 hit there. Sinclair described the album as being about how everyone tries to be perfect. The album had four singles: "Mirrors", "Wonderland", "Free", and "Kill My Boyfriend". From 2010 to 2011, Sinclair performed before concerts for artists like Kelis, Robyn, Kesha, Katy Perry, and the Black Eyed Peas.
Sinclair's second album, Trouble, was about her difficult childhood. She performed songs from Trouble at an after-party for the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in August 2013. Two days later, "Outta Time" was released for free. Trouble was officially released on September 3, 2013, in the United States and Canada.
Sinclair married singer Willy Moon on May 23, 2014, in New York City.
Being a Judge on The X Factor
In late 2014, it was announced that Sinclair and Moon would be judges on season 2 of The X Factor in New Zealand. They were mentors for the Boys and Groups categories. However, they were later replaced. Natalie Bassingthwaighte took Sinclair's place, and Shelton Woolright replaced Moon.
Cruel Youth and Recent Music
In early 2016, Sinclair started a band called Cruel Youth with her husband, Willy Moon. Their first song, "Mr. Watson", came out in February. "Diamond Days" followed in April. Their third single, "Hatefuck", was released in September. Their first album, +30mg, came out on September 16, 2016. In 2015, Sinclair also helped write Rihanna's song "Kiss It Better". This song was nominated for a Grammy Award the next year.
In 2018, Cruel Youth released two more singles: "Devil in Paradise" and "Portrait of a Female".
In 2020, Sinclair worked with Cyndi Lauper on a song called "Rats" for the Apple+ TV show Central Park.
In 2022, Sinclair and Moon received songwriting credits for "The Happiest Girl". This song is on Blackpink's album Born Pink. They also released the single "Mr. Badman" in 2022. This song was part of the soundtrack for the movie The Invitation.
In 2023, Cruel Youth released a cover of the song "Sunny" by Bobby Hebb.
Her Music Style and Inspirations
Sinclair has said that Kate Bush and Alanis Morissette are her biggest musical influences. She sees them as emotional artists who write honestly about their feelings. She also looks up to Gwen Stefani as a "hero" for her music and style. Other artists like Prince, Vanity 6, and Freddie Mercury have inspired her live performances.
Sinclair likes music that is both personal and bold. She says she listens to music to "dive in" rather than to relax. She grew up listening to bands like Hole, Marilyn Manson, and Eminem. According to Jon O'Brien from AllMusic, Sinclair's music mixes the dramatic dance-pop of Lady Gaga with old film noir movies and the dark electronic sound of Depeche Mode.
She also loves pop music. She mentions modern artists like Adele, Lana Del Rey, Marina and the Diamonds, Ivy Levan, and Lorde as inspirations. Sinclair says her own life experiences and movies also inspire her when she writes songs.
