The Legend of Lobo is an exciting adventure movie from 1962. It tells the story of Lobo, a wild wolf. Lobo was born and grew up in the southwestern part of North America.

The film is based on a true story. It comes from a book called Wild Animals I Have Known by Ernest Thompson Seton. This book was published in 1898. The movie does not say exactly when or where it takes place. This is because the story is told from Lobo's point of view.

There is no talking in the movie. Instead, the story is told through songs and narration. The Sons of the Pioneers and the Sherman Brothers created the music and songs. Rex Allen is the narrator. The real Lobo was a wolf from the 1890s. Ernest Thompson Seton, who wrote the story, was a naturalist. He also worked as a bounty hunter in the real-life account. The movie was filmed in Sedona, Arizona.

Lobo's Early Life and Adventures

The movie starts when Lobo is a tiny wolf pup. He is only six weeks old. He looks just like his brothers and sisters. His father, El Feroz, is out hunting for food. Lobo, being curious, follows his nose. He tumbles down a cliff near his family's den.

As Lobo climbs back up, a dangerous cougar appears. Things look bad for the wolf family. But then, something unexpected happens. Cattlemen riding below spot the cougar. They shoot it before it can attack the wolves. The narrator explains that the cattlemen do not like wolves. Lobo is safe only because he is hidden from their view.

Soon after, Lobo's father returns. He smells both the cougar and the cattlemen. He decides it is time for the family to move. They need to find a new, safer home.

Meeting New Animals

As Lobo and his family search for a new den, they meet many different animals. His father has a fight with a badger over a den. The badger wins the fight. At one point, Lobo wanders away from his family. He makes friends with a tortoise. He also playfully chews an armadillo's ear.

Later, a rattlesnake corners Lobo. His parents arrive just in time to save him. As Lobo grows older, he forms an unusual friendship. He becomes friends with a young antelope.

Growing Up and Facing Challenges

When Lobo is six months old, he begins to hunt with his family. They hunt herds of cattle that are moving across the desert. These cattle have replaced the wild buffalo. The cattlemen are very angry with the wolves. They want revenge. Sadly, Lobo's parents are lost to the cattlemen's efforts.

Winter arrives, and Lobo leaves his family. He starts to live on his own for the first time.

Lobo's Own Pack

In the spring, Lobo finds a new wolf pack. He challenges their leader and wins. Lobo then takes a mate. He and his pack continue to hunt cattle. Lobo is smart and avoids the angry cattlemen. The cattlemen have even offered rewards for Lobo's capture or death.

When it is time for the pack to have pups, Lobo and his mate find a very safe den. It is an old, empty building. The only way to reach it is by a shaky bridge.

The Hunter's Pursuit

Lobo keeps hunting on the cattlemen's land. Their fight with him gets more serious. To catch the wolves, a professional hunter comes from Texas. He brings his special pack of tracking hounds. These dogs include a bloodhound and several coonhounds. There are Black and Tan, Bluetick, Redbone, and Treeing Walker coonhounds. He also has a powerful wolfhound.

The hunter sets a trap for Lobo. He manages to catch Lobo's mate. He plans to use her to lure Lobo. But Lobo is clever. He leads his pack to create a cattle stampede. This causes a big distraction. Lobo uses this chance to free his mate. They then escape to a wild, unsettled area.
