Mall History: How It Grew
In the first half of the 1900s, the Short Hills area grew very quickly. People living there wanted good places to shop close to home. Their idea started to come true in 1949. The Prudential Insurance Company bought a large piece of land. This land is now where The Mall at Short Hills stands.
Seven years later, in 1956, a store called B. Altman & Company opened there. It was a big store, and they even made it larger later. People still wanted more shopping options. So, in the early 1960s, a small outdoor shopping area opened. It had stores like Bonwit Teller, FAO Schwarz, and Pottery Barn.
The mall kept growing. In 1967, America's largest Bloomingdale's store opened on the site. This store was very big. It had a whole floor just for furniture. It also had special small shops inside, like Young World and a restaurant.
Building the Enclosed Mall
In 1974, Prudential Insurance Company started working with The Taubman Company. Taubman Company is the current owner of the mall. By 1980, they finished a big project. They spent $100 million to make the mall an enclosed, indoor space. At this time, the mall had three main anchor stores. New stores like Godiva Chocolatier, The Limited, and Gap joined the mall. In 1981, another large store, Abraham & Straus, also opened there.
Major Expansions and New Stores
The mall had a big expansion project starting in 1993. The first part finished in November 1994. This added a new Saks Fifth Avenue store. The Bloomingdale's store was also updated. The Abraham & Straus store changed its name to Macy's.
The next part of the expansion finished in August 1995. This added two more large anchor stores. These were a Neiman Marcus and a Nordstrom. Many new specialty stores also opened. These included Tiffany & Co., Crate & Barrel, and DKNY.
In September 2016, the Saks Fifth Avenue store closed. Part of that space became the first Indigo Books and Music store in the United States. It opened in October 2018. Other parts of the old Saks store will become a business space called Industrious.
