The Man from Earth is a 2007 movie written by Jerome Bixby. It tells the amazing story of a man who claims to be incredibly old. The entire movie takes place in one house. Here, the main character shares a big secret with his friends.
What the Movie is About
The movie starts with John Oldman packing his things. He is moving to a new place. His friends, who are all professors, come to say goodbye. They wonder why he is leaving so suddenly. John then tells them something unbelievable. He says he is a Cro-Magnon caveman who is 14,000 years old!
His friends are shocked and don't believe him. They ask him many questions. They try to find holes in his story. They use their knowledge of biology, history, and religion to challenge him. The whole movie is a deep conversation about John's claims.
John Oldman's Amazing Claims
John Oldman makes several incredible claims about his very long life:
- He says he moves every ten years or so. This is because people start to notice he doesn't get older. That's why he is leaving his friends now.
- He claims he could have sailed with Christopher Columbus. But he didn't, because he thought the world was flat! He was afraid of falling off the edge.
- John says he was friends with the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. He even received a painting from him as a gift.
- He also claims he studied with the Buddha in India.
- Later, he tried to teach what he learned from the Buddha in Europe. He believes his teachings became the start of Christianity. John Oldman says he was the Jesus from the Christian Bible. He feels that Christianity changed a lot over time. It became something different from what he intended.
- Finally, John states he has ten doctorate degrees. He says he has one in every subject his friends teach, except for the psychologist.
