The Modern is a pair of very tall residential buildings, called skyscrapers, located in Fort Lee, New Jersey. They are close to the George Washington Bridge, which connects New Jersey to New York City.
These buildings sit high up on the Hudson Palisades, which are cliffs along the Hudson River. From The Modern, people can see amazing views of the New York City skyline, the Hudson River, and the George Washington Bridge itself.

What is The Modern?
The Modern is made up of two tall towers. These towers were designed by a company called Elkus Manfredi Architects. They are considered one of the tallest "twin-tower" projects in the world.
Building Details
Construction on The Modern started in 2014. The first tower was finished in 2015, and the second tower was completed in 2018. Each tower is about 496 ft (151 m) tall and has 47 floors.
The project has also won some awards. It received an award from the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2018. It also got a special mention in the 2019 Architecture MasterPrize.
A Big Project for Fort Lee
The Modern towers are part of a larger plan to improve a big, empty piece of land in Fort Lee. This area used to be famous for being home to America's first movie studios a long time ago.
Bringing New Life to the Area
Next to The Modern, there's another project called Hudson Lights. This area has shops, a hotel, and offices. It even has a movie theater with three screens!
The land where The Modern and Hudson Lights are built was empty for almost 47 years. Leaders in Fort Lee had wanted to develop this 16-acre site since the 1970s. There were a few attempts to build something here before, but they didn't work out.
How the Project Helps the Town
In 2016, the developers of The Modern and Hudson Lights made an agreement with Fort Lee. They agreed to make special payments to the town instead of regular property taxes. This is called "Payments in Lieu of Taxes" (PILOT).
The developers, SJP Properties, also paid for new sewer lines for the town. This helps handle the extra people living in the new buildings. A public park, about 2-acre (0.81 ha) in size, was also created between the buildings for everyone in the town to use.
The town also thought about how these new residents might affect traffic and the number of students in local schools.
