How The Pocket Was Formed

Long ago, much of Northwest Georgia was covered by a huge sea. The Pocket valley formed over many years. Weaker limestone rock slowly wore away. This left behind the stronger iron ore ridges around it. That's how this unique "pocket" shape was created.

The Pocket's Past

People have lived in The Pocket for a very long time. Cemeteries and old headstones can be found there. Some of these date back to before the American Civil War. In the past, the valley also had a watermill. This mill used water power to grind grain. There was also a cotton gin to clean cotton. A sawmill was also present, used for cutting wood.

The Civilian Conservation Corps

In 1938, a special camp was built in The Pocket. It was for the Civilian Conservation Corps, or CCC. The CCC was a program that helped young men find work during a tough time. They worked on projects to improve nature and parks. This camp was called The Pocket Camp, F-16, Company 3435.

By 1941, fewer people were unemployed. Because of this, the CCC program ended. The Pocket Camp closed down. All the buildings at the camp were taken down. Today, you can still see some parts of the old camp. Only the foundation of a springhouse remains. You can also find the floor of a large shower house.
