Plot Summary: Mia's Royal Journey
Five years after the first movie, Mia Thermopolis has finished college. She returns to Genovia with her bodyguard, Joe. Mia is getting ready to become queen when her grandmother, Queen Clarisse, steps down.
Finding a Royal Partner
At Mia's 21st birthday party, she dances with many young men hoping to find a husband. She feels a connection with a handsome man named Nicholas. During the party, Mia's tiara falls off. A member of Parliament, Viscount Mabrey, catches it. He secretly wants to take Mia's place as ruler.
The next morning, Mia finds a secret room where she can listen to Parliament meetings. Viscount Mabrey announces that his nephew, Lord Devereaux, is also an heir to the Genovian throne. Queen Clarisse objects, but the law says Mia must marry within a month to become queen. Clarisse invites Lord Devereaux to stay at the palace. Mia is surprised to learn that Lord Devereaux is actually Nicholas!
Mia's best friend, Lilly Moscovitz, visits her. They look through possible husbands. Mia eventually chooses Andrew Jacoby, Duke of Kenilworth, and they get engaged a few days later.
Mabrey's Plan and Mia's Feelings
Mabrey tries to get Nicholas to charm Mia and break off her engagement. This doesn't work, but Mia and Nicholas do have an argument. Meanwhile, Joe tries to convince Clarisse to share her feelings for him.
For a ceremony, Mia needs to ride a horse sideways, but she's not good at it. Queen Clarisse gives her a special wooden leg to make it look like she's riding correctly. Mabrey scares Mia's horse with a rubber snake. Joe rushes to help, accidentally tearing off the wooden leg. Mia feels embarrassed and runs to the stables. Nicholas tries to comfort her, but it doesn't help.
At a garden party, Mia and Nicholas argue about her relationship with Andrew. Nicholas tricks Mia into admitting she doesn't love Andrew. They argue more, then share a kiss. Mia pulls away, but Nicholas follows her, and they both fall into a fountain, getting soaked! Queen Clarisse tells Mia that her behavior with Nicholas must stop.
Mia's Kindness and New Ideas
During the Genovian Independence Day parade, Mia sees some boys being unkind to a little girl. She stops the parade to comfort the girl. Mia learns that the girl, Carolina, and other children are orphans. Mia has a vendor give them all tiaras and lets them walk with her in the parade. Everyone is impressed by her kindness. Mabrey sees it as a trick, but Nicholas is also impressed by Mia's care for Genovia. He starts to rethink taking the throne.
Mia decides to turn one of the royal palaces into a temporary children's center. That night, Mia has her bachelorette party with princesses from around the world. Queen Clarisse even surfs on a mattress and sings a song with Princess Asana!
Nicholas tries to convince his uncle to stop trying to take the throne. Mabrey realizes Nicholas has feelings for Mia. He pretends to let Nicholas pursue Mia, but secretly plans for it to ruin Mia's chances of becoming queen. It's also revealed that Mabrey has been tricking Nicholas into thinking his late father wanted him to be king.
Nicholas finds Mia practicing archery for her coronation. He helps her hit the target, which she had been struggling with. Nicholas tells Mia he is leaving but asks to see her one last time. She says no, as she is closely watched.
A Secret Meeting and a Big Decision
That night, Nicholas appears outside Mia's window and asks her to come out. Lilly encourages her to go, and Mia sneaks out. They ride to a lake, share secrets, dance, and fall asleep. They wake up to find a man in a boat filming them. Mia thinks Nicholas set her up, but he says he had no idea.
When Mia returns to the palace, the video is already being shown everywhere. Andrew is disappointed. He kisses Mia to see if they have a romantic spark. They realize they don't love each other, but they don't call off the wedding for Genovia's sake. The wedding is the next day. Mia's mother, Helen, arrives with her new husband Patrick and their baby son Trevor. Nicholas decides not to attend. However, Mabrey's housekeeper, Gretchen, tells Nicholas that Mabrey planned the video scandal.
Before the wedding, Joe tells Mia that Nicholas is innocent. As Mia walks down the aisle, she suddenly stops and runs out of the church. Queen Clarisse follows her. Mia says she doesn't want to marry because of the old law. Clarisse tells Mia to follow her heart, something she never did, which cost her Joe, the man she truly loved.
Mia goes back into the church. She points out that her grandmother has ruled Genovia for years without being married. She asks the Parliament members to think about the important women in their lives. She questions if they would force those women to marry someone they don't love. Mabrey mentions the law again and suggests his nephew be king. But Nicholas appears and refuses to be king. Mia suggests that the law about royal marriages be removed. The Parliament agrees! Encouraged by Mia, Clarisse proposes to Joe, and they get married right away.
A New Queen
About a week later, Mia is getting ready for her coronation. Nicholas arrives at the palace. He tells Mia he loves her, kneeling down, and they share a private kiss. The next day, Queen Clarisse steps down. Mia is crowned "Her Majesty Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia." Everyone in the royal palace celebrates.
At the end of the movie, we see that Genovian Parliament now allows women members, including Charlotte (Clarisse's helper). In the final scene, Queen Mia officially opens a new children's home with Carolina's help.

Possible Sequel Plans

In August of the same year, Hector Elizondo talked about the third movie. He said, "I know Anne would like to do it. I know Julie would like to do it. I would like to do it. So we're on board, it's a question of when and a question of getting a good story. I'm ready! It's time to go back to Genovia!"
In May 2018, Anne Hathaway said she still wanted to be in a third Princess Diaries film. By January 2019, she confirmed that a script was finished.
