The Story of Moses
Moses' Early Life
The Pharaoh was worried about the large number of Hebrew slaves. He ordered them to work even harder. When that did not break their spirits, he commanded that all newborn Hebrew baby boys be killed. Moses' parents, Amram and Jochebed, wanted to protect their baby. They placed him in a basket and sent him down the river. His sister, Miriam, followed to make sure he was safe.
The next morning, the Pharaoh's daughter found Moses. She adopted him and raised him as her own son. Jochebed, Moses' real mother, even became his nurse as he grew up. Moses' playmate was Ramses, the Pharaoh's son and his uncle. As teenagers, they would wrestle and play. However, Ramses did not always like Moses very much.
Moses' Exile and Return
One day, Moses saw a slave being beaten. He stepped in to help the slave. In the struggle, the person beating the slave was killed. Moses was then mistaken for a Hebrew slave because of how he looked. He was forced to leave the city. Later, his brother Aaron came forward. He told Moses about his true past. He revealed that they were actually brothers, making Moses a Hebrew.
Years passed, and Ramses became the new Pharaoh. God spoke to Moses. God told Moses to lead the Hebrew people out of Egypt. He wanted them to go to the promised land. Ramses refused to let the Hebrews go. Because of this, ten terrible plagues came upon Egypt. Ramses finally agreed to let the Hebrews leave. This happened only after a very sad plague affected the first-borns of Egypt, including his own son.
Moses then led his people out of Egypt. They escaped Ramses and his army at the Red Sea, which parted for them. After this, Moses received the Ten Commandments from God. He delivered these important rules to the Hebrews. Moses then put Joshua in charge of leading the people the rest of the way.
