How Water Flows in the Three Sisters
This section explains how water moves through the Three Sisters lakes. It describes where the water comes from and where it goes.
Size of Each Lake
Each of the Three Sisters lakes has a different size:
- The North Sister lake is about 1 km (0.62 mi) long and 300 m (980 ft) wide.
- The Middle Sister lake is about 610 m (0.38 mi) long and 1.4 km (0.87 mi) wide.
- The South Sister lake is about 500 m (1,600 ft) long and 800 m (2,600 ft) wide.
All three lakes are about 300 m (980 ft) above sea level.
Water Inflows and Outflows
Water flows into the North Sister lake from three small, unnamed streams at its northern end. The South Sister lake also gets water from two unnamed streams. One stream flows into its northern tip, and another into its southeastern tip.
The main way water leaves the Three Sisters is through an unnamed stream. This stream flows from the south end of the South Sister lake into Thieving Bear Lake. From there, the water continues on a long journey. It travels through:
- Another unnamed stream
- Net Lake
- Net Creek
- Cassels Lake
- Rabbit Lake
- The Matabitchuan River
- Lake Timiskaming
- The Ottawa River
Finally, all this water flows into the Saint Lawrence River.
