The Theodore Wint Grave is a special monument found at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia, United States. It was created by an unknown artist. This monument is the final resting place for Brigadier General Theodore J. Wint. It was studied in 1995 as part of a program to save outdoor sculptures.

What the Grave Looks Like

This grave marker is made of granite. It features a bronze picture of Brigadier General Theodore J. Wint. This picture shows his side profile. He is wearing his military uniform. You can see his epaulets, which are shoulder decorations.

The picture is shaped like an oval. It has palm fronds, which are like palm leaves, around it. This bronze picture sits on a tall, column-like base. At the very top of the column is a shiny, round sphere. The sphere rests on a design that looks like a rope or chain.

On the back of the base, there is a plaque. It shows the Seal of Pennsylvania.

Who Was Theodore Wint?

Theodore Jonathan Wint was born in Pennsylvania in March 1845. He joined the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry as a Private in February 1865. This was during the American Civil War. Later that year, he joined the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant.

He continued to move up in rank. He became a First Lieutenant in 1866 and a Captain in 1872. His final rank was Brigadier General in 1902.

His Military Service

General Wint served the United States Army in several important conflicts:

• The American Civil War
• The American Indian Wars
• The Spanish–American War
• The Philippine–American War

He also served in China from 1900 to 1901. During the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, he was injured. A bullet broke his thigh bone.

In 1874, Wint helped choose the location for Fort Reno. This fort was built in Indian Territory. It was set up to protect the Darlington Indian Agency. This happened after a Cheyenne uprising.

His Family and Legacy

Theodore Jonathan Wint married Lydia Porter Bullis in 1880. He passed away in Philadelphia in March 1907. He died from heart disease. He was buried with full military honors. A special train carried his body from Philadelphia to the cemetery. Lydia is buried near him. She passed away in 1913. General Wint was planning to retire in 1909. He was also close to being promoted to Major General.

After Wint's death, William Howard Taft spoke about him. Taft was the United States Secretary of War at the time. He said Wint was "a quiet man who did things."

Several places were named after him. Fort Wint in the Philippines is one example. There is also a VFW post in Scranton, Pennsylvania, named Gen. Theodore J. Wint Post 25. A street at Fort Leavenworth is also called Wint Avenue.

How the Grave Was Placed

This grave marker is in Section 2 of the cemetery. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania paid for it. It was put in place in 1908. The Worden Brothers Monument Manufacturing Company built it.

Looking After the Grave

The grave was checked in 1995 by the Save Outdoor Sculpture! program. They said it needed some care. In 2004, a group called Ponsford Ltd. was hired. They cleaned and waxed the Wint memorial. They also worked on other graves at Arlington National Cemetery.
