Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Theology is the study of religions or God. The word comes from two Greek words: 'theos,' meaning God, and 'logia,' meaning 'study.' So, theology literally means 'the study of God.' A person who studies theology is called a theologian. Ideas or books related to this study are known as theological.

People study theology for many different reasons. Some want to understand their own religion better. Others study it to compare different religions around the world.

What is Theology?

The word 'theology' was first used to describe the study of God in Christianity. Today, some people use it to mean the study of religion in general. However, not everyone agrees with this broader use. When people study theology across several religions at once, they might call it 'comparative theology.'

Theology in History

During the High Middle Ages, theology was considered the most important subject taught at universities. It was even called "The Queen of the Sciences."

There was a special plan for young men to learn subjects step-by-step:

  • First, they studied the easiest subjects, known as the Trivium. These included grammar, logic, and rhetoric.
  • Next, they moved on to harder subjects, called the Quadrivium. This group included arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.
  • Finally, after mastering these, students were expected to study theology.

This system meant that all other subjects were seen as tools. They helped students think deeply and understand theological ideas better.
