Third Creek facts for kids
Third Creek is a small stream (a narrow, flowing body of water) located in the central part of Missouri, specifically in Gasconade and Osage counties. It flows into the Gasconade River, which means it's a tributary – a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one.
About Third Creek
Third Creek starts in Gasconade County. The place where a river or stream begins is called its headwaters. For Third Creek, its headwaters are found just west of Missouri Route 19, north of a town called Owensville.
Where Does Third Creek Flow?
From its start, Third Creek flows generally northwest. It passes by a place known as Old Woollam. As it continues its journey, it flows under two roads, Missouri Routes P and A.
A little further along, another smaller stream called Crider Creek joins Third Creek. This means Crider Creek is also a tributary to Third Creek. After Crider Creek joins, Third Creek enters Osage County. It then travels about 1.5 miles before it meets the Gasconade River at a place called Cooper Hill. The spot where two rivers or streams join is called a confluence.
How Did Third Creek Get Its Name?
Third Creek got its name because of its location relative to the Missouri River. It was the third stream in order that flowed into the Gasconade River when counting from the nearby Missouri River. This simple naming system helped early settlers identify different waterways.
