Thomas Carey (born December 29, 1931 – died January 23, 2002) was a talented American singer. He was known as an operatic baritone, which means he had a deep, rich singing voice often used in opera.

Early Life and Learning

Thomas Carey was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina. When he was older, he served in the United States military during the Korean War. This was an important time in his life.

After his military service, Thomas decided to study singing. He went to the Henry Street Settlement and also to City College of New York to learn more about music and how to use his amazing voice.

A Star on Stage

Thomas Carey became a well-known performer. In 1970, he performed in a brand-new opera called The Knot Garden by Michael Tippett. He played the role of Mel at the famous Royal Opera House in London, England. This was a big achievement!

He also appeared in a popular musical called Show Boat. In 1971, he played the role of Joe in a London show. Many people enjoyed his performances.

Teaching and Later Life

From 1969 until he passed away, Thomas Carey shared his musical knowledge with others. He taught singing at the University of Oklahoma. He helped many young singers develop their voices.

Thomas Carey was married to a talented singer named Carol Brice. She was a contralto, which means she had a deep female singing voice. She passed away in 1985. Thomas Carey died in Norman, Oklahoma, in 2002, after battling a type of cancer.
