Thomas Connor was born in Ireland in 1842. He became a sailor in the United States Navy and served during the American Civil War. He is remembered for his bravery during a big battle, which earned him the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for military bravery in the U.S.

A Hero in the Navy

Thomas Connor moved from his home country of Ireland to the United States. He decided to join the U.S. Navy and became part of the Union side during the American Civil War. He was assigned to a large ship called the USS Minnesota. Records show that he joined the Navy from the state of Maryland.

On January 15, 1865, a very important battle happened at Fort Fisher in North Carolina. This fort was a strong base for the Confederate side. A large group of Union soldiers, sailors, and Marines worked together to capture it. They were led by Admiral David Dixon Porter and General Alfred Terry.

During this tough battle, Thomas Connor showed great courage. He was one of nine crew members from the USS Minnesota who received the Medal of Honor for their brave actions that day. The Medal of Honor is given to people in the U.S. military who show extreme bravery, often risking their own lives.
