Sir Thomas Dagworth (born 1276 – died 20 July 1350) was a brave English knight and soldier. He helped lead English and Breton armies in a region called Brittany during a very long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War.

The Hundred Years' War

The Hundred Years' War was a series of fights between England and France. It lasted for more than 100 years! Sir Thomas Dagworth played an important part in one of these smaller conflicts.

Fighting in Brittany

One part of the Hundred Years' War was called the Breton War of Succession. This was a fight over who should rule Brittany. Two main people wanted to be the Duke of Brittany: John de Montfort and Charles of Blois.

England supported John de Montfort. France supported Charles of Blois. Sir Thomas Dagworth led a small English army to help John de Montfort.

Winning Important Battles

In 1346, Sir Thomas Dagworth's small army was attacked. This happened at a place called Saint-Pol-de-Léon. Charles of Blois had a much bigger army. Even though they were almost surrounded, the English had special archers. These longbowmen used powerful bows. They helped Sir Thomas's forces win the battle!

The next year, in 1347, Sir Thomas won an even bigger victory. This was at the Battle of La Roche-Derrien. During this battle, he managed to capture Charles of Blois himself! This was a huge win.

Because of his bravery and success, Sir Thomas was called to the Parliament of England in 1347. He was given the special title of Baron Dagworth.

Sadly, Sir Thomas Dagworth was killed in an ambush. This happened on 20 July 1350. He was near a town called Auray in Brittany. A group of French and Breton soldiers attacked him.

Sir Thomas's Family

Sir Thomas Dagworth came from a place called Bradwell Juxta Coggeshall in Essex, England.

His Marriage and Children

In 1343, Sir Thomas married a woman named Eleanor de Bohun, Countess of Ormonde. Eleanor was the daughter of a powerful noble, Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford. Her mother was Elizabeth Plantagenet. Elizabeth was the sister of King Edward II.

Sir Thomas and Eleanor had one daughter, also named Eleanor. She later married a man called Walter Fitzwalter, 3rd Baron Fitzwalter.

Sir Nicholas Dagworth, who died in 1402, was probably Sir Thomas's nephew. He was the son of Sir Thomas's brother, Nicholas. Sir Nicholas also played a role in the government of Ireland later on.
