Walter FitzWalter, 3rd Baron FitzWalter (born May 31, 1345 – died September 26, 1386) was an important English soldier and nobleman. He inherited his father's title and lands at a young age. Walter was known for his military service and for being captured during a battle in France.

Early Life and Family
Walter FitzWalter was born on May 31, 1345. His father was John FitzWalter, 2nd Baron FitzWalter. His mother was Eleanor Percy. She was the daughter of Henry Percy, 2nd Baron Percy.
Walter's father passed away in 1361. At that time, Walter was only 16 years old. When he turned 21 in October 1366, he officially received his family's lands and title. This meant he became the 3rd Baron FitzWalter.
Military Adventures
Walter FitzWalter was a soldier during a time of many conflicts. He joined Sir Robert Knolles on a military mission in France. Walter was leading English troops in the northwest part of the country.
Captured in France
During this campaign, Walter and his men had to find safety. They took refuge inside Vaas Abbey. However, they were attacked by a large French army. This army was led by Louis de Sancerre. Walter was captured during this battle, known as the Battle of Pontvallain.
Paying the Ransom
Being captured meant Walter had to pay a large sum of money to be set free. This payment was called a ransom. To get the money, Walter had to borrow against his property. He used his castle and lands in Egremont as a guarantee. He borrowed from a woman named Alice Perrers. She was a well-known figure at the time.
Campaign in Spain
Later in his life, Walter continued his military career. He served with John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. John of Gaunt was a very powerful English prince. They went on a military campaign to Spain in 1386. Sadly, Walter FitzWalter died at sea during this journey. He was 41 years old.
Family Life
Walter FitzWalter was married two times during his life.
First Marriage
His first wife was Eleanor. She was the daughter of Thomas Dagworth and Eleanor de Bohun, Countess of Ormonde. Walter and Eleanor had two sons together:
- Robert Fitzwalter: He was their oldest son. Sadly, Robert passed away before his father. He did not have any children.
- Walter Fitzwalter, 4th Baron Fitzwalter: He was their second son. After his father's death, he became the 4th Baron FitzWalter. He married Joan Devereux and had children.
Second Marriage
Walter's second marriage was to Philippa. She was the daughter of John de Mohun and Joan Burghersh. This marriage did not result in any children.
