Thomas Forster Wright (born November 5, 1830 – died April 26, 1873) was an important officer in the United States Army. He served during the American Civil War and later in conflicts with Native American tribes. Thomas was born at Jefferson Barracks in Missouri. His father was General George Wright, a well-known military leader.

Serving His Country

Thomas Wright began his military career during the American Civil War. He joined the 2nd California Cavalry Regiment. Later, he also served with the 6th California Infantry Regiment. These units were part of the Union Army.

From 1861 to 1864, Wright gained experience as an officer. By October 1865, he became a Colonel. He then commanded the 2nd California Infantry Regiment. He held this important role until May 1866.

Building Camp Grant

While leading the 2nd California Infantry Regiment in 1865, Colonel Wright oversaw a big project. He helped build a new military base. This base was called Camp Grant. It was located in the Arizona Territory.

Camp Grant was built where Aravaipa Creek meets the San Pedro River. For a short time, the camp was even known as Camp Wright. This showed his direct involvement in its creation.

Post-War Service and Legacy

After the Civil War ended, Thomas Wright continued his service in the army. He returned to the rank of first lieutenant. He then served in military campaigns against Native American tribes. These were often called the Indian Campaigns.

In 1873, Lieutenant Wright was serving with the U.S. 12th Infantry Regiment. On April 26, 1873, he was involved in a conflict during the Modoc War. This event happened near the Lava Beds in northern California. Lieutenant Wright and some of his soldiers died during this battle.

Thomas Wright's body was laid to rest in Sacramento Historic City Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Sacramento, California.
