Thomas Francis Prendergast was a brave American Marine. He was born in Ireland in 1871 and later moved to the United States. He earned the highest military award, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the Philippine–American War. He passed away in 1913 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Serving His Country
Thomas Prendergast joined the United States Marine Corps in 1893. He served as a Marine for many years. He was a corporal, which is a non-commissioned officer rank in the military.
Fighting in the Philippines
In 1899, Corporal Prendergast was sent to the Philippines. He was part of a group of Marines helping the Eighth Army Corps. They were involved in jungle fighting against forces led by Emilio Aguinaldo.
Prendergast showed great bravery during these battles. His actions helped American forces clear out the opposing fighters. They also captured Malolos, which was an important city for Aguinaldo's forces. This forced Aguinaldo's group to move further north into the mountains.
Medal of Honor
For his outstanding courage, Thomas Prendergast received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award a person can get in the U.S. military. He was recognized for his "distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy in battle." His award was given on July 19, 1901.
Two other brave Marines also received the Medal of Honor for their actions during the same time. They were Private Howard Major Buckley and Private Joseph Leonard.
Later Life
Thomas Prendergast is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Philadelphia. For a long time, his grave did not have a headstone. However, in 2004, a special gravestone was placed there. This was done with military honors to remember his service and bravery.
