Thomas Gibson (born July 3, 1962) is an American actor and director. He is well-known for his TV roles. These include playing Aaron Hotchner on Criminal Minds (2005–2016). He also played Greg Montgomery on Dharma & Greg (1997–2002). Another famous role was Daniel Nyland on Chicago Hope (1994–1997).

Early life and education
Thomas Gibson was born in Charleston, South Carolina. His parents were Charles M. "Mac" and Beth Gibson. His mother worked as a social worker. His father was a lawyer and served in the South Carolina government. Thomas is Catholic.
He became interested in acting when he was very young. Thomas loved the musician Louis Armstrong. He and his sister were on a swim team. After swim meets, they often went to a pizza place. There, Thomas would sing along with a Dixieland band. He even tried to sound like Louis Armstrong.
As a child, Thomas went to Little Theater School. He later finished high school at Bishop England High School. He then studied at the College of Charleston from 1979 to 1981. During this time, he worked as an intern at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. They encouraged him to apply to the Juilliard School.
After a year and a half at Charleston, Thomas won a scholarship. He went to Juilliard's Drama Division from 1981 to 1985. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1985.
Acting career
Thomas Gibson started acting at age nine. He performed in children's theater shows. One of his first plays was Seize the Street: the Skateboard Musical. This was a Young Charleston Theater Company show. As a teenager, he joined the Young Charleston Theater Company and the Footlight Players. He often performed at the historic Dock Street Theatre.
After college, Thomas made his stage debut in New York. He appeared in David Hare's A Map of the World. He then acted in more plays for producer Joe Papp. These shows were in Public Theater and Central Park. For the next 10 years, he worked in plays both on and off Broadway. He performed in plays by famous writers like Shakespeare and Molière. During this time, he also worked as a waiter at Tavern on the Green.
Thomas Gibson first appeared on TV in 1987. He had a guest role in the show Leg Work. He then appeared in daytime dramas like As the World Turns and Another World. In 1992, he made his first movie, Far and Away, directed by Ron Howard. In this film, he played Stephen Chase. Chase was the rival of Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) for Shannon Christie's (Nicole Kidman) attention.
His next main movie role was in 1993. He played David in Love and Human Remains. Also in 1993, he was in the TV miniseries Tales of the City. He later worked with the same director again in Stardom (2000). In 1999, Thomas had a role in Stanley Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut. He worked again with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in this movie.
Thomas then returned to television. He played Dr. Danny Nyland on the medical drama Chicago Hope from 1994 to 1998. From 1997 to 2002, he starred as Greg Montgomery in the sitcom Dharma & Greg. For this role, he was nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award. After Dharma & Greg, Thomas appeared in several TV movies.
Personal life and hobbies
Thomas Gibson lives in San Antonio, Texas. He also has a house on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, which he visits often. Thomas has three children. His son, Travis Carter, appeared in an episode of Criminal Minds. He played a friend of a kidnapped child in Season 10, episode "Boxed In". Thomas and his wife Christine separated in 2011. Their divorce was finalized on February 14, 2018.
Thomas enjoys playing golf. He plays in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am every year. He also takes part in other golf events. He is friends with the golfer Corey Pavin. In 2010, he helped host the first SAG Foundation Golf Classic. He also co-hosted the second one with his Criminal Minds co-star Joe Mantegna.
