Thomas Ellis Gibson (born July 3, 1962) is an American actor and director. He is well-known for his roles as Aaron Hotchner on the TV show Criminal Minds (2005–2016). He also played Greg Montgomery on Dharma & Greg (1997–2002) and Daniel Nyland on Chicago Hope (1994–1997).

Early Life and Education
Thomas Gibson was born in Charleston, South Carolina. His father was a lawyer and his mother was a social worker. Thomas became interested in acting at a young age. He loved listening to the jazz musician Louis Armstrong. He even tried to sing like Armstrong at a pizza place after swim meets.
As a child, Thomas went to Little Theater School. He later graduated from Bishop England High School. He then studied at the College of Charleston from 1979 to 1981. During this time, he worked as an intern at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. They encouraged him to apply to the Juilliard School, a famous performing arts school. Thomas won a scholarship to Juilliard and graduated in 1985 with a special degree in Fine Arts.
Acting Career Highlights
Thomas Gibson started acting when he was nine years old. He performed in children's theater shows. As a teenager, he trained in classical theater. He was part of the Young Charleston Theater Company. He often performed at the historic Dock Street Theatre.
His first big stage role was in a play called A Map of the World. He performed in many plays both on and off Broadway for 10 years. He acted in plays by famous writers like Shakespeare and Molière.

Thomas Gibson returned to television in 1994. He played Dr. Danny Nyland on the medical drama Chicago Hope until 1998. From 1997 to 2002, he starred as Greg Montgomery in the sitcom Dharma & Greg. For this role, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award twice. After Dharma & Greg, Thomas appeared in several TV movies.
Role in Criminal Minds
In 2005, Thomas Gibson was cast in a lead role on the TV series Criminal Minds. He played Supervisory Special Agent Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner. Hotch was the unit chief of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). This role became one of his most famous.
Thomas also directed six episodes of Criminal Minds starting in 2013. He had previously directed two episodes of Dharma & Greg. In August 2016, Thomas Gibson's contract with Criminal Minds was ended. His character, Hotch, left the show. In the show, Hotch resigned and entered the Witness Protection Program to protect his son.
Personal Life
Thomas Gibson lives in San Antonio, Texas. He also has a house on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. He has three children. His son, Travis Carter, even appeared in an episode of Criminal Minds. Thomas and his wife Christine separated in 2011, and their divorce was finalized in 2018.
Thomas enjoys playing golf. He often plays in golf events like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He is friends with golfer Corey Pavin. He has also helped host golf events for the SAG Foundation.
