Thomas McElwee (born November 30, 1957 – died August 8, 1981) was involved with the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA). He took part in a major protest called the 1981 Irish hunger strike. Thomas was from Bellaghy, a town in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. He passed away at the age of 23 after protesting for 62 days without food.

Early Life and Involvement

Thomas McElwee and his cousin, Francis Hughes, were part of a group that carried out actions in their area. For several years, they were involved in incidents against British Army patrols. They also carried out actions involving explosives in nearby towns like Magherafelt, Castledawson, and Maghera.

In October 1976, Thomas McElwee was involved in a planned action in the town of Ballymena. While moving one of the explosive devices, it went off too early. This accident caused him to lose sight in his right eye. After this, he was arrested. He was later sentenced to 20 years in prison. This was for having explosives and for an incident where a shop was destroyed by fire, which led to the death of Yvonne Dunlop, who worked there.

While in prison, Thomas became involved in a protest known as the blanket protest. This was a way for prisoners to show their disagreement with prison rules. Later, he joined the 1981 Irish hunger strike. He died on August 8, 1981, at 23 years old, after 62 days on the strike.

Legacy and Remembrance

Thomas McElwee is remembered in different ways. For example, a local group in Waterford named itself after him. He is also the main subject of a song called Farewell to Bellaghy. This song also mentions his cousin, Francis Hughes, and other people from their group. Another song, The Story of Thomas McElwee by the band The Crucifucks, is also about him.
