Thomas R. Hawkins (born 1840 – died February 28, 1870) was a brave African-American soldier. He fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor, which is the highest award for bravery in the United States. He earned it for his actions at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm.
Early Military Service
Thomas Hawkins joined the Union Army on August 4, 1863. He joined as a substitute soldier from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Soon after, on August 23, he became a Sergeant Major. This was a high rank for a non-commissioned officer. He served in the 6th U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment. This unit was made up of African-American soldiers.
Battle of Chaffin's Farm
On September 29, 1864, Sergeant Major Hawkins fought in the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. This important battle took place in Virginia. During the fight, he showed incredible courage. He helped save his regiment's flags, also known as "colors." These flags were very important to a military unit. They represented the unit's honor and spirit.
Medal of Honor and Later Life
Sergeant Major Hawkins was discharged from the army in May 1865. He had been wounded during the battle. More than five years later, on February 8, 1870, he received the Medal of Honor. This award recognized his bravery in saving the regimental colors.
Sadly, Thomas Hawkins died shortly after receiving his medal. He passed away from cancer on February 28, 1870. He was only 29 or 30 years old. He was first buried in Columbian Harmony Cemetery in Washington, D.C. In 1960, his remains were moved to National Harmony Memorial Park in Landover, Maryland. This happened when the original cemetery closed. A special plaque was placed at his grave in 1997 to honor him.
Legacy
Thomas Hawkins' bravery at the Battle of Chaffin's Farm (also known as New Market Heights) is remembered today. His actions are shown in a painting called Three Medals of Honor. The artist is Don Troiani. This painting was shown to the public on June 24, 2013, at the Union League of Philadelphia. It helps people remember the courage of soldiers like Thomas Hawkins.
