On January 22, 2011, before a game against Texas, the Kansas team and fans held a moment of silence. This was to honor Thomas, who had lost his grandmother, grandfather, and mother within just three weeks. His coach, Bill Self, said it was "remarkable" that Thomas was even able to play.

College Awards and Honors

On March 4, 2012, Thomas was named the 2012 Big 12 Player of the Year. This award is chosen by the league's head coaches. The next day, the Associated Press also named him the Big 12 Player of the Year.
