Tyshawn Jamar Taylor (born April 12, 1990) is an American former professional basketball player. He was a talented point guard who played college basketball for the University of Kansas. After his college career, he was chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2012 NBA draft.

High School Basketball Journey

Tyshawn Taylor went to St. Anthony High School in New Jersey. There, he played basketball for the famous coach Bob Hurley.

An Undefeated Season

During the 2007–08 season, Tyshawn's team had an amazing year. They won all 32 of their games, finishing with a perfect record of 32–0. Because of their incredible performance, USA Today named them the best high school basketball team in the country.

A Highly Rated Player

Experts at Rivals.com thought Tyshawn was a top player. They gave him a "four-star recruit" rating. In 2008, he was ranked as the 11th best point guard in the entire nation. He was also listed as the 77th best player overall.

College Basketball Career

Tyshawn Taylor played college basketball for the University of Kansas. He was a key player for the team for four years.

Freshman Year Success (2008–09)

In his first year, Tyshawn showed great promise. He scored about 9.7 points per game and made 3.0 assists per game. His strong performance earned him a spot on the Big 12 All-Rookie team. This award recognizes the best first-year players in the Big 12 Conference.

Sophomore Season and Team Wins (2009–10)

Before his second year, Tyshawn changed his jersey number from 15 to 10. He averaged 7.2 points and 3.4 assists per game. His team, the 2009–10 Kansas Jayhawks men's basketball team, had a very successful season. They won both the Big 12 regular season championship and the Big 12 tournament championship.

Junior Year and Leading Assists (2010–11)

In his junior year, Tyshawn averaged 9.3 points and 4.6 assists. He was the top player on his team for assists. He was also ranked fourth in the entire Big 12 conference for assists. During this season, he had a short suspension for violating team rules.

Senior Year and Championship Game (2011–12)

Tyshawn started for Kansas for his fourth straight year. He almost doubled his scoring average from previous seasons. Along with another star player, Thomas Robinson, Tyshawn helped lead Kansas to the 2012 national championship game. They played against Kentucky but unfortunately lost.

Professional Basketball Journey

After college, Tyshawn Taylor began his professional basketball career. He played for several teams in different leagues around the world.

Starting in the NBA: Brooklyn Nets (2012–2014)

On June 28, 2012, Tyshawn was picked 41st overall in the 2012 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Soon after, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He signed with the Nets on July 6, 2012.

When the Nets' star player, Deron Williams, was injured, Tyshawn got more playing time. In one game, he scored a career-high 12 points in 34 minutes. The Nets won that game against the Indiana Pacers. During his time with the Nets, he also played for their minor league team, the Springfield Armor, in the NBA D-League.

Moving to Other Teams (2014–2021)

Tyshawn's journey in professional basketball took him to many different teams:

  • In January 2014, he briefly joined the Maine Red Claws.
  • From February to May 2014, he played for Atléticos de San Germán in Puerto Rico.
  • From 2014 to 2015, he played for Dynamo Moscow in Russia.
  • In 2015, he returned to Puerto Rico to play for Indios de Mayagüez.
  • In 2016, he played for Guaros de Lara in Venezuela.
  • From 2016 to 2017, he was with Maccabi Kiryat Gat in Israel.
  • In 2017, he played for Ankara DSİ in Turkey.
  • In 2018, he joined Samsun BSB Anakent, also in Turkey.
  • From 2018 to 2020, he played for Auxilium Torino in Italy.
  • From 2020 to 2021, his last team was the Saigon Heat in the ASEAN Basketball League.

Retirement

On October 25, 2021, Tyshawn Taylor announced that he was retiring from professional basketball.

The Basketball Tournament (TBT)

Tyshawn Taylor also played in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), which is shown on ESPN. He competed in TBT for three years.

Playing for Team FOE

In the summer of 2017, Tyshawn played for Team FOE. This team was based in Philadelphia and coached by NBA forwards Markieff and Marcus Morris.

  • In four games, Tyshawn averaged 12.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.
  • Team FOE made it to the Super 16 Round in Brooklyn, New York.
  • They lost a close game, 72–67, to Boeheim's Army, a team made up of players from Syracuse University.
