Thomas Warren Bennett (born February 16, 1831, died February 2, 1893) was an important leader in American history. He served as the governor of Idaho Territory from 1871 to 1875. After that, he became a representative for Idaho in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before moving to Idaho, he also served in the Indiana State Senate.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Bennett was born in Union County, Indiana. When he was 19, in 1850, he left his family's farm to go to college. He attended Indiana Asbury University, which is now known as DePauw University. He studied law there and earned his law degree in 1855.

A Career of Public Service

After finishing college, Bennett returned to his hometown of Liberty, Indiana. He worked as a lawyer there until the American Civil War began.

Serving in the Civil War

During the Civil War, Thomas Bennett showed great leadership. He helped gather a group of volunteers to fight for the Union. He was made a captain and bravely served, eventually reaching the rank of colonel. He was also recognized as a brigadier general. After the war, he moved to Richmond, Indiana. There, he was elected mayor and served for two years.

Becoming Governor of Idaho

Thomas Bennett was chosen by President Ulysses S. Grant to be the governor of Idaho Territory. This was a big responsibility! It took some time to find the right person for the job. Several people were offered the role before Bennett. Some accepted but then took other jobs, and one even resigned after just a week because he didn't like the Idaho landscape.

Finally, Thomas Bennett accepted the position. He became the fifth governor of Idaho Territory in 1871. He served in this important role until 1875.

Representing Idaho in Congress

In 1874, Thomas Bennett was elected to represent Idaho Territory in the United States House of Representatives. He served as a delegate, meaning he spoke for Idaho in Congress. He held this position until June 1876. At that time, a recount of the votes showed that his opponent, Stephen S. Fenn, had actually won the election. After leaving his role in Congress, Bennett returned to his home state of Indiana.

Later Life and Death

Thomas Bennett passed away on February 2, 1893, in Richmond, Indiana. He was buried at Earlham Cemetery in Richmond.
