The Gallipoli peninsula (Turkish: Gelibolu Yarımadası) is a special piece of land. It is located in the European part of Turkey, known as Thrace. To its west is the Aegean Sea. To its east are the Dardanelles straits. This area has a very long and important history.

History of Gallipoli

Early Times and Ottoman Rule

In 1354, a big earthquake hit the area. The Greek city of Gallipoli was left empty after this event. Soon after, Turks from Anatolia moved in and took over. This made Gallipoli the first place the Ottoman Empire controlled in Europe.

The peninsula was once part of the Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman Empire slowly took control of it. This happened over many years, from the 1200s to the 1400s. By the 1800s, about 30,000 people lived in the city of Gallipoli. They came from different groups, including Greeks, Turks, Armenians, and Jews.

Gallipoli in Wars

Gallipoli became a big military camp during the Crimean War in 1854. British and French soldiers stayed there. It was also an important stop on the way to Constantinople (which is now called Istanbul).

Later, in World War I, Gallipoli became very famous. It was the site of the Gallipoli Campaign. This was a major battle that took place there.

What "Gallipoli" Means

The name Gallipoli comes from the Greek language. The Greek word "Καλλίπολις" (Kallipolis) means "Beautiful City."

In ancient times, people called this area the Thracian Chersonese. This name means "Thracian Peninsula."
