About Thread-Leaf Chive
What It Looks Like
Thread-leaf chive is a perennial plant. This means it lives for more than two years. It is also a herb, which means it has soft stems instead of woody ones.
This plant has a special stem called a scape. This scape is round and can grow quite tall, up to 70 centimeters (about 27 inches). Its leaves are usually about the same length as this tall stem. The flowers of the thread-leaf chive are a pretty purple color.
Different Types of Thread-Leaf Chive
Scientists have found two main types, or varieties, of Allium anisopodium. They have small differences in how they look and feel.
- Allium anisopodium var. anisopodium: This type has smooth leaves, stems (scapes), and flower stalks (pedicels). Everything feels nice and smooth.
- Allium anisopodium var. zimmermannianum: This type is a bit different. Its leaves, stems (scapes), and flower stalks (pedicels) have a rough surface. It might feel a little bumpy if you touch them.
