Throston is a part of northern Hartlepool in County Durham, England. It's a busy, urban area today. The name 'Throston' comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word, thosson, which means 'hill'. This tells us that the area might have been known for its hills a long time ago.

Throston's Past: How It Grew
Throston has changed a lot over many years. It started as a small area called a township within the larger parish of Hartlepool. A parish is like a local area, often linked to a church.
Becoming Its Own Parish
In 1866, Throston became its own separate civil parish. This meant it had its own local government. The parish was located near the Headland, looking out over the Tees Bay. It also included farms and open land further inland, like Dyke House and West View. Some places even used 'Throston' in their names, such as High Throston and Throston Grange.
Splitting Up and Growing
As Hartlepool grew, Throston's boundaries changed. In 1894, the parish was split into two parts. The area outside the main town became 'Throston Rural' parish. This rural part existed until 1932, when it joined West Hartlepool. The urban part of Throston had already become part of Hartlepool in 1883. This urban parish was officially ended on 1 April 1936. In 1931, about 3,729 people lived in the parish. Today, Throston is mostly a town area, with many homes and buildings.

Throston is home to several schools for young people. There are many primary schools in the area. These include Throston Primary, Brougham Primary, Springwell Primary, Sacred Heart (a Roman Catholic school), St Bega's (another Roman Catholic school), and West View Primary. For older students, Dyke House Academy and its sixth form are also located in Throston.
