Thurgood Marshall Jr. (born August 12, 1956) is an American lawyer. He is the son of Thurgood Marshall, a famous Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. Marshall worked in the Bill Clinton White House. He was also a partner at an international law firm. He served as the chairman of the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Ford Foundation.

Marshall is on the board of directors for several companies. These include En+ Group, which makes low-carbon aluminum. He also works with DRB Capital, a financial services company. He has served on the board of Corrections Corporation of America. This company helps with federal detainment and prisoner transport. Since 2012, he has been a director for Genesco. This company sells shoes and clothes around the world.

Early Life and Education

Marshall was born on August 12, 1956, in New York City. His father was Justice Thurgood Marshall. He was the first Black American to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. His mother was Cecilia Suyat Marshall, a Filipino American. She was his father's second wife. Marshall's brother is John W. Marshall. He used to be Virginia's Secretary of Public Safety.

Marshall went to school at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C. He also attended the Dalton School in New York City. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy. In 1978, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia. He then earned a law degree (Juris Doctor) from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1981.

Government Work

Early in his career, Marshall worked for a judge named Barrington D. Parker. He also practiced law in Washington and New York. Later, he worked on Capitol Hill and in the White House. He was a lawyer for Senator Edward M. Kennedy. He also worked for Senators Ernest F. Hollings and Albert Gore Jr.

Marshall was a director of legislative affairs for Vice President Al Gore. He also worked as a deputy counsel for Gore. Before that, he helped with Gore's 1988 presidential campaign. He was also an advisor for Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.

From 1997, Marshall worked in the Clinton administration. He was an assistant to the president. He also served as the White House Cabinet Secretary. Marshall was previously married to Colleen P. Mahoney. They have two sons, Thurgood William and Edward Patrick Marshall. Marshall and his first wife were sworn into the Supreme Court together. This happened on June 24, 1991, by his father, Justice Thurgood Marshall.
