Ti' punch facts for kids
Ti' punch (pronounced "tee ponch") is a special drink from the Caribbean islands. Its name means "small punch" in French. It's very popular in places like Martinique, Guadeloupe, Haiti, French Guiana, and Réunion. In Martinique and Guadeloupe, it's even their official drink!
Ti' punch is made with a special kind of rum called rhum agricole. It also uses lime and cane syrup, which is a sweet liquid from sugar cane. While some people might add other fruit flavors or use sugar instead of syrup, a true Ti' punch always uses rhum agricole.
It's a bit like the daiquiri from Cuba or the caipirinha from Brazil. But there's a big difference: Ti' punch mostly uses the peel (zest) of the lime, not much of its juice.
How Ti' Punch is Served
Ti' punch is usually served before a meal. This kind of drink is called an apéritif.
There's a fun tradition with Ti' punch. It's called "each prepares their own death" in French. This means the person serving the drink gives everyone the ingredients: glasses, syrup, limes, and rum. But they don't mix the drink for you! Each person gets to make their own Ti' punch exactly how they like it.
Long ago, when Ti' punch first became popular, ice was not easy to find in the Caribbean. So, people often drank it without ice. Today, you can still drink it without ice, or you can add ice if you prefer!
